Are you going to watch the aurora borealis tonight?

Asked by keobooks (14327points) April 13th, 2013

Check out this map. Due to a huge solar flare a few days ago, we are due for an unusually southern viewing of aurora borealis. I can’t wait!

Sadly, I’m much too far south to ever see it.

I’d sure like to, but it seems to be of poor visibility in my area. I’ll certainly keep a lookout for them tonight though, maybe I’ll be able to see it.

Also, fun arora borealis myths;
According to old Inuit beliefs, don’t clap your hands when you see those. They then come down and steal your soul.

In Norse mythology, aurora borealis were believed to be the flashing armor of riding Valkyries.

I always try, but we will probably have cloud cover this evening. I have seen them only once in my life, and it was here, from my upstairs window.

@gailcalled That’s probbaly what’s going to keep me from seeing them as well; damn cloudy today. :/

I am in the area of the map with good viewing, but it’s really cloudy. I hope it clears up some, I have always wanted to see them and I never have.

I am also in the good viewing, but hoping for the clouds to break up. I’ve never seen them and I am 41. I want to get a chance!

Two of the greatest moments in my life were seeing the total eclipse of the sun in Virginia Beach in March, 1977 and the great dazzling Leonid meteor shower in Nov. 1999, from my deck.

My last wish is to get a really good look at the aurorae without leaving home.

We’re in the ‘Good’ viewing area, and the sun is trying to break through; but I’m not sure where I could go to get a good view of the northern horizon, since we are just south-southwest of NYC and light pollution to the north is worse.

@keobooks Thanks for letting us know. I’m not in the viewing area, but I appreciate being able to find that out.

Right now it’s too cloudy. I’m hoping it clears enough for visibility here. It’s been years since I saw the lights last.

Thanks for the heads up. I’m in a borderline good area.
I hope it is clear tonight.

^^^Don’t count on it.

We found a spot bordering a farmer’s field and waited from 7:45 until 8:30. It’s a gorgeous clear night, but we saw nothing and the forecast http://helios.swpc.noaa.gov/ovation/# isn’t looking so great for the next hour, so we called it. sigh

Dangit man I’m too far south. That is interesting though!

keobooks's avatar

It’s not looking too good here. The clouds are bulking up and the KP levels (whatever those are) are only at 3 and they need to be at 7 to make it down here.

keobooks's avatar

It was a bust – the KP index (whatever that is) was way too low to make it down here.

At 10 PM, the Kp index went down to a 2. It’s still too low to see any aurora activity here in Indiana. The rating did NOT go up with the latest observation, it actually went down 1 so I wouldn’t bank on seeing the northern lights tonight. The storm appears to have been too weak.

Thanks for the update. I just looked and saw—- rain. I’m going back to bed.

SpatzieLover's avatar

I stayed up until 2am. It did clear up quite nicely for a while. There were no lights to see :/

^^^ Where are you?

Ih the two counties just south (just north of NYC) of me, there was a pretty good show last night. Nothing here due to cloud cover.
