Why would you call a woman sir?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) April 13th, 2013

And why would a woman want to be addressed that way? Do they do this in the military if a female is of high rank?

I was watching one of my favorite shows, Castle, and this female detective called her female Captain, sir. Is it just a sign of respect? Why not ma’am?
I’m really curious.

Because ma’am sounds like mom.

It could be done facetiously or in jest.. Female military officers are called ma’am or by their rank.

Could be sarcasm. We’d have to see the context.

It’s just wrong. I would imagine it was done in a unisex way, but I hate it.

Totally out of line and rude as well. I don’t like being one of the “guys” and this is even worse. Men are offended and they consider it an insult to them if called ladies or girls. I consider this an insult as well. Actually it is a demotion!

Because some women view Peppermint Patty as role model.

@dxs You probably mean Peppermint Patty’s friend Marcie.
Peppermint Patty doesn’t like being called “sir”.

It’s better to call them “Mr. Monkey”. Everyone wins.
