Is it just me, or are we all a bit more emotionally charged right now?
Maybe this is just me, but it seems like Fluther is full of way more controversial threads than usual, and we’re getting a lot more heated in our discussions. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, it’s just an interesting observation. I do find that just reading these heated discussions gets exhausting, not to mention participating in them! Does this always happen in the days after a disaster like the Boston Marathon bombings? I can’t remember – what did Fluther look like after Sandy Hook, or the Aurora, CO shootings?

You should see it around the time of elections!
@RandomGirl No, I think it just certain subjects generate a lot of heat. It makes for some intense discussions. We just have to remember not to go after each other personally.
The argumentitive fuckers always find time to spew out their shite, pay them no mind for they have but one brain cell…between them.
I’m too busy and too tired to get embroiled in any drama rama stuff. I have had my moments of sharp debate, and can certainly hold my own, but peace and serenity is where it’s at. Dueling egos are just a circle jerk of opinions and I prefer to make my statements and move on for the most part. I don’t do irrational egos at all.
same old shit, just a different day
sigh
It happens on an opinion site often. Some people think their opinion outweighs and overrides the rest of us jellies, and some of us think it’s rude and call them out.
They call God a fairytale, they think people praying for them is all for show, that all religion is wack, it’s all so incredibly negative, but they wonder why people leave so often. I may stand up for what I believe, but I also try very hard not to belittle or demean others, it’s difficult because you know most of these people are normally pretty cool.
Funny, I was thinking just the opposite.
I’ve asked a couple questions lately that I thought would get some real action going, but not much happened.
But if a thread gets long enough, say about as long as this one, there will usually be at least one insult or condescending response. See above.
@josie didn’t you and I just say the same thing? Only yours was more verbose?
Maybe I’m not opening the same questions, but things seem pretty low-key to me.
@rojo Yes. Yours was more efficient.
This is actually really tame, compared to how it’s been at other times.
I’ve been skipping some of the questions that look like fireworks. Avoided that prayer one for sure. There were so many responses already I could tell there was heat there.
@Judi Good for you, it degenerated into juvenile posts about body parts, as usual. The anti-religion crowd turns those Q’s into big jokes and I left when body parts were being sexually bantered about. Pretty sad.
@tom_g No offense, I couldn’t participate any longer though.
None taken (I don’t get offended). I was just kidding. I hadn’t contributed to that thread. I’m certainly “anti-religion”, but I don’t think I turn many questions into big jokes. (I hope not, anyway).
@tom_g Nope, you seem to be a little more tactful than some.
In fairness, I think those who started talking about body parts pretty much do that on every question. It wasn’t a particularly anti-religion body part-related thing.
@glacial I know and I love them and their humor. Time and place though.
Interesting. I was tempted to ask a similar question last week. Lately, many people seem grumpy and/or argumentative on here. I’ve certainly noticed a difference from when I was here last summer.
Something in the tide pool perhaps.
Is it too early to degenerate this thread into a boob and butt discussion?
Just asking
It’s never too late to talk tit, apparently it makes us insensitive arses though :/
Mild mild – it’s been much crazier in the past – I can think of at least 5 very controversial and opinionated people (whom I miss nonetheless) who have since left…
Plus I’ve mellowed in my old age. But if you’d like an argument…
Edit: @rojo – always a good time for boobs.
@zenzen It’s more interesting when it’s controversial. The only things I don’t think are very funny are mocking God/ religion or my country. I take both very seriously and would give my life for both. I think some people just don’t understand or care.
At work I personally instigated a joke where I called the receptionist (with all my co-workers around me) and all the computer voice said was “boobies” a few times, so I get humor, let’s not get it twisted. :)
Heard an interview this morning of a psychologist who said that events that remind us of our mortality and vulnerability cause us to fall back into more entrenched ideological positions. He sees 9/11 as having been a catalyst for the extreme polarization of the American electorate.
@thorninmud Not sure that I would agree with him about 9/11 being the catalyst. I recall we were pretty polarized prior to that what with the SC awarding the presidency to Bush, Gingrichs’ Contract with America and Armey and the Republican Revolution of the 90’s. I would even go so far as to say that, if you had to have a catalyst, the election of Reagan was the emotional trigger. With his election the conservative Rep. party began to steamroller the competition and the Dems had to go back and completely retool their message.
