How often do workers sign out items, or modify a product for themselves before putting the item on shelf?

Asked by talljasperman (21919points) April 17th, 2013

I admit that at my first real job I worked at a VHS rental store, and I claimed first dibs on merchandise and new releases from time to time. I also made super unique burgers from fast food joints when I worked for them, while the customers where unaware that more options exist than was on the menu. (Example a five patty burger with both secret sauces with interlocking french fries with mayonnaise wrapped in long strips of moist bacon.) What secret employee perks do you know exist in goods and services?

@talljasperman Your description of that 5-tiered burger made me smile. That’s my first smile in 2 days. Thank you.

I know I will go to McDonalds hell for this but…. I once put 2 pieces of cheese on my Filet-O-Fish. Delicious.

I get lots of perks now. I’m a technical guy and have access to all kinds of test equipment. I measure things that most people do not think of measuring. When I weigh my luggage the weight is correct to 0.1 grams. Letters are good to 0.01 grams.
The post office asked ME how much things weigh.

I love that last line, @LuckyGuy. Kinda priceless.

When I worked in the kitchen staff at a summer camp for underprivileged city kids back in the 1970s we made our own perks, too. (I had wanted to be, and had applied to be a counselor, and this job was – at first – a disappointment, but it turned out to be one of the best jobs available, and WAY better than being a counselor.)

We slept in the converted barn that was a commercial-size kitchen at one end, dining hall through the main structure, and lofts turned into bedrooms above. If we had a hankering for a midnight snack, we indulged! We just had to clean up after ourselves. Since we lived close to each other, if one of us was in the kitchen at midnight, then we all knew, all came down, and all snacked. We finally had to discipline ourselves and agree to “no more than 3 midnight snacks a week”.
