How can I stream music from my computer?

Asked by Nyz_Nymmfs (16points) April 19th, 2013

I have a large music library on my computer at home and I would like to be able to type in an ip address on another computer (not on the local intranet) and have music start playing.
I have a Windows 7 desktop and a Fedora Linux laptop.

Or I suppose you could just use Pandora, which is a free Internet radio that allows you to play similar music to your liking. It’s cool and convenient and you wouldn’t have to download anything.

You could also upload the music from your computer to the “cloud”, then access that music from the cloud to any other device, including tablets. Any cloud would work, iCloud, Amazon, Google, etc.

There are a couple of obstacles, but it is possible to get around those.

First, what is that IP address you’re going to type in? Your home computer probably goes through a router on your home LAN that connects you to the internet. On the internet side most of us don’t get a static IP address, i.e. it can change. There are web sites you can visit from your LAN that can tell you what IP you are using on the internet, but you either have to do that before you leave home, and bet that it doesn’t change (that’s entirely up to your ISP). Or you can set up something that automatically checks once in a while to see what is the external IP and publishes that IP on a web page that you can get to reliably.

Once you know the IP address your home LAN router is presenting to the outside world you still need to get in past your router. Most routers allow you to expose a machine through it to the outside world, check in your router configuration.

Right now I am using a temporary solution of having my music on dropbox.
