Anonymous calls for internet blackout today, April 22. Is this why I can't access Facebook, Google and Gmail right now?

Anonymous calls for internet blackout to protest CISPA

I found out about this blackout this morning on Facebook from a news organization I follow. That was 3 hours ago. I went to get back on my computer and now I can’t access Facebook, Google or Gmail. I don’t use Twitter, but according to downrightnow Twitter is also having service trouble.

Is this all related or is it a problem on my end? Anyone else having trouble accessing these sites right now?

I am not having any issues at all. Facebook has been fine for me all day, I have Twitfeed up and active on my desktop, and I have looked at Google’s Earthday applet three times already.

If you are on a windows PC, maybe you need to reboot.

It must be you. I can get anywhere I want. I thought that the so-called blackout was to be voluntary. If not, then Anonymous has just lost a lot of the respect I had for them.

I just googled something a few minutes ago with no problems and I’ve been using it off and on for several hours.

Hmm. I rebooted and I still have the same problem. I have no problem with Fluther or Accuweather, but the connection to the others I listed in the details is rejected. It worked fine for me this morning around 7am. I’m having the same problem with my husband’s laptop.

No problems here today.

I don’t have any problem. That’s very strange.

It sounds like a DNS issue with your router. Have you tried turning it off and on again? (The router, not the computers on the network).

Which browser are you using? Have you tried it with a different browser like Firefox.

My guess would be that if Anonymous is behind this that they would target IE since that’s the one used by the highest percentage of people.

My other guess would be that if you were using Chrome that you’d be getting Google search just fine (Since it’s also a Google product)

I’m on my tablet which runs Android (also a Google product) so no problems here.

Thanks everyone. I turned off the router and turned it back on. Now everything works again.

@Buttonstc I use Chrome and my husband uses Firefox.

Since part of my question had to do with Anonymous, has anyone come across a site that has voluntarily shut down today?

Well, as I said, mine were guesses (and none too accurate at that :)

I’m glad DeanV had the right answer. Since it was the router, the browser was moot.

But it’s good to hear you guys are smart enough to avoid IE :)
