What is the best term for the stage between toddler and tween?

Asked by flo (13313points) April 22nd, 2013

Other than “preschool”, I mean.
Different sources give different info.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_development_stages doesn’t help me.
This
says “school age” they are all school age after kindergarden and aren’t they? It is not specific enough, I don’t think.

Anyway what is the best term for between 5–10 years old?

Elementary school age, I would think.

Very pleasant!

flo's avatar

@janbb I wish we would all stay that way, very pleasant.

What is wrong with “Between 5 and 10”?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Preangry teenagers from hell?

flo's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe but they aren’t teeneagers yet, before tween even. I think they are pleasant just not as heavenly as 2 year olds, though.

bkcunningham's avatar

I agree with @augustlan. Elementary school aged children.

…except for this adorable tyrant.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@flo Yeah, I should edit that but it’s out there. I meant they aren’t quite there yet. Still with some innocence.

What’s wrong with “kid?” That’s the term that’s been going around forever.

flo's avatar

@bkcunningham but an 11 year old is still in elemantary school, and even 12year olds are in elemantary sometimes.

I’ve always used “school aged”.

That little girl is so beautiful! “No cank you. Worry about yourself. You drive!”

I aagree with @keobooks “Kids”. Or formally, “children”.

augustlan's avatar

Children or kids works for me, too.

Toddleween?

I say school-aged or elementary-aged.

livelaughlove21's avatar

According to Erik Erikson, 6–12 years is called “school age.”

@gailcalled School age

Not sure if it makes a difference either way…

gailcalled's avatar

^^^Aha. The stage is called school age; the child is called school-aged.

flo's avatar

Let me put it this way, what if we take out the school part out of it. How about before there were schools?

@bkcunningham she is too cute. what is she is saying between ’‘worry about yourself’ and ’’‘No cank you’’, I tried to use the caption.

flo's avatar

@Pachyderm_In_The_Room but they are out of toddlerhood and not yet tweenhood. Funny term though.

livelaughlove21's avatar

It’s pretty clear at this point that there is no word for this particular age group that does not have to do with school. When all else fails, they’re just kids.

keobooks's avatar

When you use school-aged, you have to remember there is a preschooler stage as well. Preschooler is 3–5.
