What is the best temperature to keep the house during the summer?

Asked by cutiepi92 (2252points) April 22nd, 2013

So my family and I are having a bit of a trouble finding some compromise. If it is too warm when I try to sleep, I either can’t sleep or get physically sick (I wake up with extreme nausea if it is 75F in the house). It’s just too uncomfortable and I can’t get any proper rest. Because of this, I like it at 70F. My family (60+) likes it at around 74/75F and have not been turning the air conditioning on. Lately, it’s been getting to 80F outside, so I can only imagine what it’ll be like come June. It’s hard finding compromise because even with my room fan on and door open, it’s still too hot for me. The fan doesn’t make the room cooler and it’s just annoying having all that air blowing hard on me when I’m trying to sleep. What should we do? It’s starting to get very troublesome waking up in the middle of the night sweating and feeling sick and having to turn the heat down…..especially since I’m the one in the house that has to leave the earliest….I really need my sleep…

I’m going to skip your first question and answer What should we do?

Can you buy a small window air conditioner for just your bedroom?

well i suppose i had the first question because i want to know if i’m crazy or not for not being able to be comfortable at 75F lol. But thanks for your suggestion

Well to keep it comfortable we keep it around 66 degrees F year round. It stays cool and is not to hot, but is also not so cold as to be uncomfortable.

You aren’t crazy @cutiepi92. :) I wouldn’t be comfortable with 75F myself. I’m more comfortable when it’s cooler in the bedroom at night. I keep our bedroom at 68F in the summer.

Your Californian aren’t you? Buy one of those twin blade window fans from Walmart, put it up, turn it on. Close your door, sleep well. It’s best to blow hot air out and keeping cool are in. When you open your door, it’s like opening a window in the car when the AC is on.

I always heard 68 in the winter and 78 in the summer but I’m usually higher in the winter and lower in the summer myself.

Would your family consider making the air conditioning cooler only at night? The way I see it, you can always put some warmer clothes on or add another blanket, but there’s nothing you can do to make yourself cooler except turn the air conditioning on. If it’s making you feel nauseated an unable to sleep, that’s a serious concern that is worth discussing with them. If this doesn’t work, I also like @jonsblond‘s suggestion to buy an air conditioning unit for your room, but keep in mind that it can be a little costly.

Another suggestion- Do you have a ceiling fan or a plug-in fan? If it’s a ceiling fan, make sure you have it on the right setting (the reverse of the normal setting of a fan that pushes/blows air down); the setting for the warmer months should pull air up so that the cooler air rises. It won’t make a huge difference, but I know all too well that every little bit helps.

We have a similar problem in my house. We keep the house at a reasonable temperature (72/73 degrees or so), though this is still a little on the warm side for me since I, too, get hot easily and my family prefers it a little warmer. That I can deal with. But there is some sort of problem with my room, though we have never been able to determine what, that keeps my room about 5 degrees or so warmer than all of the other rooms in the house. Like you, this makes me feel sick and makes it extremely difficult to sleep. And on top of that, I have a back problem and I frequently sleep with a heating pad. I have a ceiling fan, but as you know, there is only so much that can do. Unfortunately, this is an ongoing dilemma in my house because the temperature in my room is somehow independent from the general temperature of the house.

I keep my house at 77–78 in the summer. It doesn’t really matter what temperature I am comfortable at though, you need to sleep. I think get a space air conditioner for your bedroom. All winter long I carry around my space heater, and I hate having to do it, but it is the most reasonable solution, and saves me some money not heating the entire house. Especially if the rest of your family is freezing at night at the tempurature you want the house at. I hate waking up cold! But, I am sure you are just as uncomfortable waking up hot, and I respect that.

Also, one degree just so the air clicks on might be a compromise that works. Maybe if the air was set at 74 to get some of the humidity out of the air.

Lastly, if you are very hot all the time compared to most people it can be a possible sign of an endocrine problem like hyperthyroid. It absolutely can just be you tend to be hotter and nothing is wrong, but if you have other physical symptoms it is something to consider.

Wait, sorry for multiple posts. You said you wake up and have to turn the heat down?! So is your family heating the house to 75? That is very warm for most people. Cooling to 75 is a different story.
