What are you supposed to ask on Fluther?

Everyone says don’t ask certain things. What do you ask?

This should probably be in Meta.
You can ask just about anything as long as it’s respectful, spelled correctly, and hasn’t already been asked a million times.
Just make sure if it includes vulgarity that its not in the title and that its labeled “NSFW.”
I had a question modded because “vagina” was in the question. I had to put NSFW in the title and move vagina to the body of the question.

Who says don’t ask about certain things? There are no restrictions. Ask about things that you want to know the answer to or have a discussion about.

Anything – there are only a few boundaries.
-Don’t just type up homework questions and hope we figure it out for you. Asking, “How do you simplify equations like this?” is fine. Don’t ask, “Can you simplify this equation?”
-Realize there are no all-knowing genies here; relationship questions get pretty confusing, and only you really know the people involved.
-Respect others. If you ask for advice, don’t tell people their advice is stupid. There are a lot of wise people here who’ve been around the block a couple times more than you have. (I’m guessing you’re a teenager or a twenty-something?)
-Don’t be obnoxious. You know what I mean – asking the same question every day for a week, asking questions that are bound to stir up trouble, etc.
-Don’t act like somebody you’re not. Just because we don’t know you in real life, doesn’t mean you can be somebody different here.

@Rockstar0224 You can ask anything you want. Just some topics get heated responses from some jellies, usually religon, politics, etc. I’ve even used vulgarities in the question and as long as it’s related to the question it goes through.

Everyone says don’t ask homework but my question is about education and not homework.

That should be fine @Rockstar0224.

@Rockstar0224 You can ask homework questions. We don’t give you the answer but we help point you in the direction you need to go.

People get very touchy about homework questions, even though they’re not against the guidelines. If you need help with a homework question, it’s best to be honest about that, and tell us what you’ve done for yourself to try to work towards an answer, and ask for pointers about what to try next. Sometimes, attitude makes all the difference. If you just ask the question as it appears on your assignment, people will perceive you as “cheating” and be less helpful.

Good luck! :)

Sorry. I accidentally typed that

“Supposed to” doesn’t even figure in. To quite a very old saying, “You pays your nickle and takes your chance.” Now, whether an individual jellie reacts positively or negatively to a question has to do with a variety of factors including age, religious/political upbringing, nationality, interests, etc., but I would say that as a rule, most questions are acceptable, if not comment-inducing, to most members of this site.

Jellies who consider a question not acceptable can simply ignore or flag it. They can also jump into the thread and articulate their displeasure with the question, if they’re willing to entertain other opinions.

I myself ask questions about anything that interests me and/or have been unable to find answers in other ways that satisfy me. I use Google a lot, but being able to ask (or comment upon) a question among fellow jellies in real time is a great luxury and often generates one or more answers, or at least perspectives, that I usually find very helpful.

Basically what @glacial advised is good advice. If you have a homework question, just say right up front in your explanation that this is homework and the information you already know. Jellies can help you, maybe tell you how to search for the answers to get you started. If you find some info you can add it yourself to the thread in an answer and Jellies might go on to discuss the answer if there is some controversy surrounding the subject. You have to be willing to do the work is the main thing.

We’re much more likely to help you write an essay than to give you a straight up answer that’s written in your textbook.

…as far as homework goes.

Fluther is more a discussion forum than a binary question/answer bulletin board. If the question can be written in multiple-choice format, it would be better to rethink the question.

For example, instead of “Who did Thomas Edison steal the light bulb from?” you might say “Why does Thomas Edison get so much credit for Nicola Tesla’s work?”

There are a few other types of questions I can think of that would not be very popular on Fluther. Things like “Am I pregnant?” and “Does this dream mean my crush likes me?”

Then we get the tag-team spam questions; a question like “Where is a good place to buy handbags in India?” rapidly followed by an answer from another account leaving a link to a website. Those get pulled as soon as a mod spots them.

I’ve noticed a few of those today but I’m on my mobile and can’t flag them

I think homework questions are a grey area. Fluther could be quite useful in cases where you can’t quite figure out how to set up a ratio equation or if you haven’t a formed opinion about what a certain Constitutional amendment means in relation to a new issue.

You can ask anything. If you don’t want it to be flagged or to be chastised for asking homework questions, simply don’t phrase it in homework terms. It can be really valuable to get other people’s input/opinions to help your form your own premise for a paper. Don’t mention that it’s for homework and don’t plagiarize a fellow Jelly’s answer.

Do use the variety of answers you’ll get to help you determine what you will do with your premise.

As to other subjects:
It’s all ok so long as you spell everything correctly.
