Honest opinions about the name "Desmond"?

Asked by Tequila (337points) April 24th, 2013

What do you think of the name Desmond? I heard someone say it reminds them too much of the LOST (tv series) and that throughout his life people will constantly be saying “see you in another life, brother”... but I happen to love it. Thoughts?

Reminds me of a priest in a ballet skirt, what’s his name again…?

I like it. It’s distinguished and different. If you are considering it for a child’s name, most likely their generation won’t know Desmond’s line from Lost. Even if they do, there are worse things that can be said to a child based upon their name.

I don’t mind it. I know someone named Desmond. I looked up the meaning, and it means “a man from south Muenster”. According to Google, it also stands for “Diabetes Education and Self Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed”.

I automatically follow it with “Tutu”.

I like it. It’s got a bunch of possible nicknames too.

It strikes me as an old fashioned name. I’ve known people who introduce themselves as Des, but nobody who refers to themself as Desmond. I don’t know why but when I think of a man called Desmond – I see Derek Nimmo. Sort of nerdy in a nice sort of way. Who knows why this is! I can’t imagine a little boy called Desmond. It seems too old for a little person.

@Bellatrix I like Dezi as a nickname. Although you have a good point with the formality of Desmond.

Don’t like it. Handicapping as an adult. Whether or not you approve of the military, you want to make sure your sons have names that would look reasonably good if they were generals. Desmond doesn’t do it. Dezi certainly does not.

And before you give me shit, Josie is a military nickname, misspelled by an NCO. My real name is Phillip.

It depends. Honest opinion? It doesn’t sound real manly to me. Kind of prissy. Just my opinion.

It’s a good name. There’s nothing wrong with it.

Personally, I don’t care for it, but if you like it then that’s all that matters.

Desmond Leonard, my old gym teacher.
Desmond Decker and the Aces.
Desmond Tutu.
Desmond had a barrow in the market place. Molly was a singer in the band.
I love the name Desmond. My daughter nearly named my grandson that.

I think it’s a fine name and you could call him Dez for short, if you wanted to.

I have never watched Lost, so I have no idea what that relationship is. I think it’s a very cute name, and you could always use the nickname, Desi (like Desi Arnaz). It sounds very British to me, like Nigel or Graham. And of course there is Desmond Tutu, which is also not a bad connotation.

And of course, there is always the nifty Beatles connection: “Desmond has his barrow in the market place, Molly is a singer in the band…”

Well, the guy in the Assassin’s Creed games is named Desmond, so that’s pretty cool. And that kid from Little Criminals is always being called ’‘Dez’’, I’m guessing his name is Desmond.

Without or without references to fictional dudes though, it’s a fine name.

And fuck Lost.

“Yoo-hoo, Desmond darling, would you be a sweetheart & buff my bumhole…thanks sugarpuff, mwahh!”
Yeah, all male wax/bleach technicians should be named Desmond, it just works.

Mwaaarghaaaa, mmmmm, if you like it it’s all that counts, who cares what the rest of us think. It wouldn’t be in the top 2000 name on my list, but…..

LornaLove's avatar

It’s OK, just a tad old fashioned I feel.

elbanditoroso's avatar

Pretentious and arrogant. Instant snob.

No one in his life will ever remember “Lost”. I don’t even remember Lost, and I caught a couple of episodes.

Desmond initially reminds me of Desmond Tutu. Which, y’know, if you like that sort of thing.

SadieMartinPaul's avatar

Thumbs down. The name just seems a bit too pretentious. Also, I fear that it might be bait for schoolyard @$$kickings.

Kardamom's avatar

I think most of us are assuming you are in the U.S. I think in Britain, it would be more acceptable. I’m also thinking it would make a nice name for a girl, but I’m guessing you meant for a boy, right?

Bellatrix's avatar

I’m British @Kardamom. I was one of the people who said the name suggested ‘nerdy’ but nice.
