German speaking jellies- any name suggestions?
My hubby still can’t decide on a name for our dog. Since he’s a German Shepherd, I thought it might be fun to suggest German foods or terms of endearment (besides Shatzie).
Any of you have any ideas? I’ve been googling, but can’t find much except Shatzie or Schnitzel.

F*ck the hubby and you name the dog. ;-)
Berliner Pfannkuchen
Currywurst
@ragingloli What’s “Hase” mean, and how is it pronounced?
I had a dog named ‘Hoss” once. That was a great dog name. The dog itself was stupid. But I’m a cat person.
@Mama_Cakes I’m trying to let him pick one he likes, since he compromised a while back and let me have two cats… The only problem is that he keeps suggesting names that are too common and boring for my taste.
Klaus
Kaiser
Rolf
Wolfgang or Wolfie
Plus the ones I’d put on your FB post the other day: Carl, Dieter, Fritz (Fritzie)
Gunter
Typical names from my German relatives: Gunner, Tanner, Skeeter, Spitzie (Usually for a Spitz breed….but not always), Shotzie (Alternative American spelling for Schatzie)
Then fav foods, sausage and beers all come in as names, as well.
Blitz (think of all of Santa’s reindeer names ;)
Bengel, Baldo, Bärli, Gauner, Hans, Heinrich (Heinie), Tristan <—-all have been horse/dog/bull names
:) Okay! Hope that you find a good one!
Liebsten = Sweetheart
The first boxer I rescued was named this. It didn’t roll off the tongue easily so I renamed her Lexi.
@chyna
It is either LiebsteR (male) or LiebstE (female)
@ragingloli I was going by what I was told, I had no idea if it was even correct. But that is what they called her.
Scatz or Schatzi means treasure.
Pfeffer (pronounced feffer) means pepper.
I really appreciate all of the suggestions, on both threads. I’ve never had such a hard time naming an animal before, haha!
If it were up to me, I’d call him Jedi, Dezi, or Fritzie. Sadly for me, the hubby doesn’t like those. :(
More common ones like Rocky, Rusty, Lucky, Copper, etc… I understand why a lot of people like those, I just prefer something a little more unusual.
Hans….You could even go Star Wars with it.
I’m with you @WillWorkForChocolate. I try to pick less common ones as well. Maybe he has a favorite author?
We have a Dickens here. He was almost Dickon (for character in The Secret Garden).
Heineken….teach it how to fetch beers.
All I can say is when I saw the picture of him, I thought of Toby.
@ragingloli I actually like that, but my stupid tongue gets stuck on single syllable names, when I’m calling for the pooch to come back in.
I told him he’s taking too long and I’m naming the dog Pickles, lmao!
Schnitzel sounds cool. Wienerschnitzel could be his full name.
On the Star Wars theme… going by the kinds of noises my GSD used to make, Chewbacca would be a good name. I know, not German:-)
I like the author idea. What about “Schiller”? “Heine”? If you’re looking for something ending in an “ee” sound, though, that could be difficult… “Fiffi” is the German name for yapping lap dogs. I also thought of “Krümel”, “crumbs”. Or maybe the German word some kind of small animal?
You could also call him Köter or Töle. (both derogatory terms for dogs)
@ccrow Haha, our cats are Chewy and Yoda!
@ragingloli Nah, I’m not fond of the derogatory pet names.
^Oooh, then I like going with a Star Wars theme.
Bingo, only said the way Hans Landa says it in Inglorious Basterds…“Ooh, binggggohhhhhh!”
Speaking of which, you could call him Hans Olo
Spandau
Audi
BMW…Big Massive Woof
Vorsprung durch technik
Kraftwerk
Bayern
He whispered in my ear and suggested, “Fritz.”
My personal favourite Jäger (Hunter)
Waldi (my husbands tells me lots of dogs in Baden-Württemberg are called Waldi but they are daschunds)
Ratzinger (last pope)
Wargner,
Löwe it means Lion
Schnitzel
Colonel Klink or Schultz from Hogans Heros
As I have written elsewhere, when I was a kid, we called our dachshund Hagen, after the black knight in the Nibelungenlied. We didn’t even bother with any nicknames.
I’m with your husband… I think the German name thing might be fun at first, but then eventually seem cumbersome. He doesn’t like Max? That would satisfy both of your needs, no?
It bothers me to give my pets a name that is so common. I don’t want to walk my dog into the vet and be waiting with several other dogs with the same name. Drives me nuts.
I felt the same way when we named our children. A name is a very important thing, to me, and if it’s shared with too many other people/pets, then it’s just boring.
Jäger,Jäger,Jäger (pronounced Yayger as in Chuck Yaeger) it’s strong and manly but cool as well. It has Swag. And it’s a name such a big cutie with floppy ears can grow into :)
Has anyone mentioned Shäfer, which means shepherd in German?
I have two German friends, they are called Olaf and Jupp (pronounced Yuup).
He finally decided on Loki.
That’s not German but Scandinavian, but still, a nice name.
A Norwegian Shepherd?
Shepherd in Norwegian is hyrde.
Haha, I guess so! He didn’t like any of the German names at all, and only halfway liked a few others that I suggested.
And it works well if he’s the mellow type. :P
