Which paint colors are in fashion this season?

Asked by LornaLove (10037points) April 26th, 2013

I am enjoying the coffee colors and latte shades. Anyone using wall paper? If so which types?

The question read ‘which colors are in fashion this season’. Not what color should I paint my home.

I’m doing my house in good old antique white USA with charcoals and reds, I can change the red to green turquoise orange etc with the base of white charcoal. I just got rid of all the ‘70s mission brown and timber so anything in that spectrum is not welcome in my house unless it’s the table! Haha

I once met a interior designer who pulled together incredible decoration schemes at some of the hotels I inspected. He told me his secret for choosing color schemes. “The colors surrounding women when they were in their early teens come back into popularity when they are old enough to afford to decorate their own home.” This explains the resurrection, albeit brief, of the avocado and antique gold a few years ago.

The best way to find out what’s in fashion is to pick up a few interior design magazines. Most of them are full of ads that provide a website where you can obtain specific information on anything that piques your interest. You can often request samples.

As for wall paper, (or paint for that matter), it depends upon where you live. In the US, I find wallpaper a rarity. Maybe it’s because most of my life has been spent living in the south. Moisture is a problem, and it’s easier to oversee mold problems if there is no wall covering other than paint.

My SO’s home (in England) has Lincrusta on just about every wall in the house. This wall vinyl is awesome. It not only provides an additional layer of insulation and sound barrier, but is it is decorative, timeless and can be painted. It’s not cheap nor a short-term decision, based upon the process of applying it, but it is timeless.

How about candy colors, they are beautiful and especially suit for summer.

I’ve been seeing purples and royal and indigo blues.
Complement with greens and yellows.

I visit a lot of model homes, for fun, and I really like this neutral soft gold wall color, with white trim. Like This

I also really like the darker, chocolately colored walls with the white trim. Like This

This is nice too. A darker orangey/gold (not bright, but neutral, even though it is a color) with the darker wood.

My own bedroom has these Colors, a taupe accent wall, with the other 3 painted sand color. I have blonde wood flooring though, and both work fine.

I just painted a friend’s living room, similar to This with one long accent wall painted the sage green and the other walls and trim were white, with a warm oak hardwood floor.

A Bold, but not obnoxious color, like this cayenne colored accent wall is very dramatic, yet at the same time, very cozy. I recently painted our formerly beige, small powder room this color, all four walls, but the ceiling is white and the trim is white. We thought it would make it look too small, but it didn’t and now it’s a very elegant space. We have a bronze colored towel rack and bronze colored bathroom accessories like the soap dispenser and toothbrush holder, the sink and the cupboard are white, and there’s a big mirror behind the sink and toilet. We have landscape photographs, that I took, that have some of this beautiful red in them, along with 2 other pictures that look wonderful with this red behind them.

I also saw a wonderful living room that had one accent wall painted This Color which I describe as Portobello mushroom, See the dark color on the gills? And the other three walls were painted a neutral sandy-beige color, and the ceiling and trim was white. It was breathtaking!

In general, I’m not too fond of wallpaper, although I have seen it used in small powder rooms where it looked great. I hate it for other rooms, though, especially since it’s a pain in the neck to change it, if you don’t like it, and if you hang pictures and want to move them, then you’ve got holes in your paper. I also have bad negative connotations of wall paper from seeing it in the homes of my friend’s when I was little, all that country floral stuff, makes me shudder. To me, wallpaper is way too busy.

However, I have seen some really nice Framed Wallpaper Swatches that make great art works to hang on painted walls.

Pantone is pretty much the expert on color trends, and has named Emerald Green the color of 2013.

In addition to emerald, Pantone’s Color of the Year, pastels are huge this season, both in fashion and in home decorating.

Pastels mixed with metallics.
(Think pale pink and copper.)

But I’d say go with coffee colors and latte shades. No need to second guess your own tastes. :)

@Pied_Pfeffer Interesting!
