I perk up when I see Gold smelting videos; is that a sign that I could be happy as a metalsmith?

Asked by talljasperman (21919points) April 27th, 2013

Where can I get more information on being a Gold smelter? Videos other than just YouTube, and Wikipedia. I watch Yukon Gold, Bearing Sea Gold, and Alaska Gold rush and I think that other than the video crew that the only people who make a profit, (and get to see Gold), are the middle men who buy and/or smelt Gold nuggets into bars.

Define “perk up”

@XOIIO (NSFW) I drop what I am doing and devote all my attention to watching and dreaming about holding a bar of Gold in my hand, and me working at the smelter, melting my own Gold and carrying $1500 an ounce, and hording it in my room and staring at it for hours at a time… It’s almost like a fetish. (Or Gold Fever.)

My first thought is that this sounds like an obsession that might get out of hand if unchecked. You mentioned you dream of hoarding the gold in your room; would you actually do this? If you say no right now, do you think it’d be long before your desire to own the gold overrode the logic saying not to? Because I think you might be riding a fine line in a job like that.

Sounds less like you would be suited for the profession and you just like the gold, the good thing is you can buy it.

“I perk up when I see Gold smelting videos”
Much like numerous people whom perk up when they see fireworks.
Gold is in the News all the time now that it has hit a high rate of return for investors.
Years ago they pushed RSP’s etc, its just now that Gold is the popular commodity to invest in.
If worried about your security, it is natural to want to horde Gold or other means of investments for your future.
Soon Gold will bottom out. Then what?
