What are the chances of this diagnosis being correct for a lifelong non-smoker?

Asked by Aster (20028points) April 29th, 2013

An old friend of mine spent six weeks in the hospital with C-diff . When they finally called in a gastroenterologist she began eating again. A month before she got C-diff she had rectal prolapse (which her husband announced on Facebook) ; then the C-diff after her colon surgery . Three days ago she was dismissed and had a hard time breathing. He took her to the ER and they dismissed her and said , “she now has COPD.” I think she’s getting pneumonia ; she has never smoked a cigarette in her life and her husband doesn’t smoke. What are her chances of COPD? She has always stayed home most of the time and has never lived with smokers. This entire episode began with obesity.

I’m no doc but obesity may crush or weaken the lungs I’d think. Ask rarebear.

Nearly 25 percent of COPD sufferers are people who have never smoked.
