Nvidia geforce display locked above resolution, can't start windows?

Asked by manuel_alarcon (299points) April 29th, 2013

Hi, I got myself a used Dell Vostro desktop pc (winXp) with an nvidia geforce 8300 graphics card; staring at the screen, when reading news or long documents made the eyes hurt a little, so I checked all the screen resolutions and monitor settings; then I realized the nvidia drivers were outdated (2007) so I updated them, but when I checked the new menu, changed the resolution to see the top resolution, but suddendly the monitor went black and reads “unable to display resolution” and since then I cant start windows, even in safe mode. I hope there is a workaround, or a manual reset to the display, so I can do something because the good ‘ol useful desktop pc turned into a big empty useless box with lights…

Sound strange… It should have started in safemode even if there was a driver error, atlast mine did last week..

Is there any video outputs on the motherboard in addition to the Geforce card ? Maybe use thtat to uninstall and reinstall driver ?

Yikes! ...Are there multiple video outputs on the computer? Sometimes there is a VGA or other low-end output that remains usable when the fancy ones go wonkers. If you can disconnect the fancy outputs (DVI/HDMI) and connect to that and reboot you might be able to reset your display settings.

I agree with @Staalesen and @dabbler try and hook vid out to your mobo rather than the vid card to fix your resolution problem.

Also try booting in safe mode.

I tried rebooting in vga mode then i could fix the problem. But like two weeks later, I updated the drivers again, but same thing happened. So I booted in vga mode, unstalled all the new drivers and installed the old version,... works just fine.
