What 5 songs would you want played at your funeral or memorial service?

Asked by jca (36062points) May 1st, 2013

If you could choose (ahead of time, obviously) 5 songs that you want to be played at your memorial service or funeral, what would they be?

Songs that you hope remind your friends of you, songs you liked, whatever your reasons are.

I thought of this for some reason today when I heard the song from the Lion King, by Elton John. I think it’s called “Can you feel the love tonight.” I don’t usually like love songs, and I have never seen the Lion King in its entirety but for some reason that song touches me.

Processional ‘By the Rising of the Moon’
At the service He is Risen
Abide With Me
At the burial I would want ‘Ghosts of Culloden’ on the bagpipes.

Can’t remember the 5th.

I was just thinking about it and I need a 6th one since my husband has already passed over and was an amazing drummer, even winning the worlds at one time, so I need a drum roll to make sure he’d be there to pick me up in the after life :) I want this on a loud stereo at the after life party if the funeral home won’t do it.

I shouldn’t answer this because my choices would bring down the walls of the church or funeral home and sure wouldn’t please the old people in my family.

Right off the top of my head without much forethought:

Sunshine On My Shoulders
Hello Again
I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For
It Keeps You Running
What A Wonderful World

First off, my funeral better not be some sad sappy bullshit. I want people having a party celebrating my life and the good times rather than sitting around crying.

The Golden Path
Hell in a Hand Basket
Nothing is Something Worth Doing

And then I want this to play when you light the pyre under my body.

I love far to many pieces of music to make a definitive choice, and besides, I’m not ready to think about my own funeral yet—but any or all of these selections would be dandy:

Somewhere in Time
Lark Ascending
Last Tango in Paris
Enigma Variations for Orchestra, Op.36-Nimrod
Straight Into the Sunrise
Cavatini
Try to Remember (the Harry Belafonte version only, please)

I can’t imagine anyone giving a bugger what happens. If I died tomorrow, my kid would be swooped up into State care and I would be given a paupers funeral that I don’t think 5 people would show up at…. so… nope. No music. My estranged husband might insist on having some horrible, death, black metal played, just to spite me, but I very much doubt he could even muster enough GAF to bother, even if he did happen to be in the city at the time.

I think about this sometimes – but I can never make a decision. I vacillate between being classy and having things like Elgar’s Enigma Variations for Orchestra, Op 36-Nimrod or Blake’s Jerusalem.

Or more contemporary music.

To not so classy but fitting with Always look on the bright side of life.

Should it even be my decision? Or should the music reflect the way those I leave behind feel about me (in which case Ding, Dong, the Witch is Dead might appear)?

I only want one song, Baby Got Back, played during my funeral on a continuous loop.

My final quip.

I don’t think I’ll care at that point…

I don’t currently have any songs that I feel represent me.

My mother has given me an envelope that supposedly includes that information for her memorial service.

That’s very hard I have not decided but one I do like is forever autumn.

Just Five???? For various reasons, I’d like these songs:

Corner of the Sky from Pippin
Elsewhere by Sarah McLachlan
To Where You Are by Josh Groban
Angels Among Us by ALABAMA. not Demi Whatever.
Eagles and Horses/Country Roads by John Denver
I’m Your Angel by Celine Dion and R Kelly

I would want lots of songs from RENT: Today for You, Seasons of Love, La Vie Boheme, No Day But Today, and I’ll Cover You

I’d love lots of music with a loud DJ, light shows, ASL interpreter. I like Broadway songs, Irish music, dance music, Garth Brooks, Alabama, Madonna, Sarah McLachlan, 80’s music, Wham!, Indigo Girls, Aerosmith, Will Smith, U2… as long as it’s eclectic and meaningful.

Those Were The Days while my friends and family get sloshed and laugh at all the stupid shit we did together.
