Why did the last Pope move into an apartment behind Pope Francis?

Asked by Aster (20028points) May 2nd, 2013

I read on the news that there’s an apartment with its own chapel behind the Vatican and the last Pope moved in today or very recently after saying he would ‘live in hiding for the rest of my days.” Does anyone know anything about this? There was a photo of Pope Francis welcoming him back.

I wouldn’t want to live under the same roof as my successor, would you?

More importantly, as I understand it, Benedict XVI’s health continues to decline. I’m sure he and his staff will want the space and privacy for any medical attention he will need.
