Does anyone have any experience painting glow in the dark star murals?

Asked by El_Cadejo (34610points) May 3rd, 2013

I’ve decided I want to paint my ceiling to look like looking out into the galaxy when the lights are off at night. Some of the things people are able to do are awesome . I have however never done anything like this so I’m a bit clueless.

I found a couple sites explaining proper techniques and it seems rather straight forward and easy enough to do but getting first hand knowledge from experienced people always helps. :)

Any techniques I should do to maximize the realistic effect of it?

I found a couple different brands of glow in the dark paint but I’m having a hard time finding any real reviews of the top brands I keep finding. Anyone have any experience with glow in the dark paint in general that could recommend a good brand?

How cool! I’ve never done anything that advanced, but if you’re interested, there seem to be a lot of kits available. Oooh, this seems helpful. This too (I like the Star Wars music background).

@syz yea glonation was the one site I keep coming to. They seem to have a good selection of products and nice pricing but I can’t find many reviews as to how good the product actually is.

some of the best ceilings I have seen though have a mixture of paint and actual LED lights installed in the ceiling to simulate twinkling…..or are you not trying to go that far? lol

@cutiepi92 not really, no. I only plan on being at house for another year or so, so only painting for me.

Oh man, awesome! This isn’t necessarily helpful, but since you said you only plan on living there a year or so, and if for any reason you don’t end up wanting to commit to the painting aspect, I was going to recommend as an easier option what I currently have on my ceiling, which is glow in the dark star stickers of various sizes that I have plastered all over the area above my bed….also, the sticker sheets came with a few different full moons which I cut into different shapes myself to make a very crescent moon because I like that phase of the moon best! It actually looks really really cool, and it’s bright and awesome at night when all else is dark as well. I put them up one time while I was on acid. It was exceptionally moving for me at the time and now everytime I see them I associate it with my being out of this world myself lol. Anyhow whatever you pick will be really great.

The pictures you liked to are amazing. I can’t believe they were done with only paint though, are you sure they didn’t have lights? If it was just paint, they are masters of light against dark. But you are a painter aren’t you? Or do I have you mixed up with someone else?

@deni I want something a bit more realistic than that. Really I want to have the big nebula clouds.

@rooeytoo I can’t say for sure that all of them on google are just paint but some of the really exceptional ones I do know are paints and powders. I think the powder is what’s really needed to give that extra bit of realism and the effects of the clouds. I paint but I’m not a painter. Just an amateur artist :)

There are definitely some fantastic results. I will have to research some more, I didn’t know about powders. Might be interesting to incorporate some of them into paintings on canvas! When you finish, put some pics up, I want to see how it turns out. I am sure you will do a great job.

@rooeytoo I’ve seen some really cool paintings where artists have used paints and powders to supplement their image or give it a totally different look when in the dark. I’ll be doing my room in the next two weeks so I’ll upload some pictures when its done.

I wanted to do something in my room with ClearNeon paint, I love that its only visible under black light, but in the end I ended up going with florescent spray paint because it was really cheap and I didn’t have to wait for anything to be delivered so if I needed more of one color I could just pop over to home. Depot and pick up another can. Have you seen any of these techniques ?
The unfortunate part of glow in the dark paint is that it doesn’t glow for very long unless its under uv, and as soon as you turn off the UV it’s only going to last about 15–20 max. It also has a tendency to glow unevenly. In my experience it never ends up the way you hope it will but I know you are a much more artistic person than I am so maybe it will work better for you.
You could probably make some wicked clouds with spray paint (just make sure to put plastic down in your room, think like Dexter).

@cheebdragon Evidently some of these glonation paints (greens and blues) will last several hours. Thanks for the link to the techniques I’ll have to check them out and try and figure out what I’m doing.
