How do you think this formed?

Asked by Pied_Pfeffer (28144points) May 4th, 2013

A friend posted a photo on Facebook of what he found when he opened his freezer door. Image

He has no clue how this stalagmite formed on a single ice cube. My guess was that there was another tray above it, but he said that this one was on top.

Something was dripping on to it. And it dripped after the ice tray had frozen, so it’s not something that formed with the underlying cube.

@zenvelo How might that occur? Let’s say that the power went out for a period of time and condensation built up on the roof faster than the ice cube melted. Even if it was caused by a constant drip, would it form in this shape? I would expect a drip to form a standard stalagmite formation…thicker at the base with a sharp tip on top.

Frozen on the outside first, and formed pressure inside that pushed water out perhaps ?

This phenomenon is common when rapid solidification occurs of a substance that is expanding. As the water freezes from the edges, it exerts pressure upwards, forcing water out, where it freezes. The freezer may be set very low.

maybe there is a hair inside.

Ice porn got it excited?

@flutherother That’s quite interesting. Your response was posted on his thread. I’ll let you know what he says.

@janbb That’s funny, especially coming from a penguin reading a magazine while sitting on an ice block.

He’s now talking about purchasing a low-temperature camera and attempting to duplicate the effect.
