Why does my computer output volume drop to 20% whenever I plug/unplug a USB device?

Asked by El_Cadejo (34610points) May 5th, 2013

It’s quite odd…
If I plug in or unplug a usb device my sound drops dramatically. It doesn’t matter if it’s a device like a webcam or a mouse/keyboard. The other odd thing is that the act of plug/unplug doesn’t cause the main output to drop but rather whatever program is outputting sound(chrome, firefox, vlc, winamp etc)

I’ve already tried going into the sound properties and disabling “allow applications to take exclusive control of this device” but that didn’t seem to do anything

Any ideas what is going on here and how to fix it?

I don’t know. I just wanted to say hi.

Hi!

Is the speaker plugged into a USB port?

@asmonet hey stranger :)

@Tropical_Willie No, I’m using a HDMI output for both audio and video hooked up to a tv screen.
But like I said I can watch the bar drop automatically on the mixer which is odd.

Make sure this panel in the “Sound” control panel is unchecked.

@DeanV my hero! Somehow I totally didn’t see that tab at all. All better now, thanks man. Just wonder why it thinks I’m getting a call when I unplug/plug in stuff…
