Does anyone use an exercise app? Which one is the best?

Asked by nebule (16462points) May 7th, 2013

Hi All! I’m just wondering if anyone uses an exercise app to keep them motivated and work towards long terms fitness and weight loss goals?

I’ve searched on my iphone for them and found quite a few but I’m specifically looking for one which will help me get motivated and work towards long term goals. I’ve very much a reward driven person rather than punishment, so I think short, medium and long terms goals and rewards are important. And I’d like to be able to do a range of different exercises, walking, home DVDs, some gym work perhaps and some exercise with free weights in my home.

I don’t have time every day to go to the gym, so it would need to be flexible. I am not a runner and have bad knees and history of arthritis in my family so I don’t really want to start running, but open to other things.

Can anyone help?

My daughter is raving about Insanity. I have no idea what that is, but she says it kicks ass.

My partner has one on her iPhone for running. It coaches her while she’s running a 5K. The voice sounds an awful lot like Naomi Watts (“One more K to go!”), but it’s not. We like to pretend that it is! :D

I used an app called MyFitnessPal for a while, but soon couldn’t be bothered filling in everything I was doing. Now I just try to eat well, and get as much excersise as I can.

Not an exercise app… but hubby and I just finished a diet bet and signed up for another one.

You pay upfront and everyone who loses 4% of their body weight in 28 days split the pot. Feel free to PM me if you’d like more info.

Nothing motivates me like the fear of losing my own money. :)

I hope you find what you are looking for! We all need help with motivation sometimes.

I hear good things about Fitness Buddy. I use Lose It, but it’s really only for keeping track of calories eaten and calories burned. There’s no motivation aspect unless you know people that use the same app.

@filmfann Insanity is an intense exercise program, not an app. I mean, they may have an app, but the program is a series of workouts you can purchase on DVD.

I’m not sure about the rewards aspect except for the results, but there are some free tabatta clock aps that you can get for your phone. Tabatta Training is self paced and quick. All it takes is 20 seconds. ~
You can to it anywhere and sometimes it’s easier to do several short bouts in a day than committing 1.5 hours that you dread.
It’s worth a shot.
The Wii Fit also has a lot of positive reinforcement if you have a Wii.

Maybe this one could help you: homegym-exercises
There are a few exercises in it. It can be used with a smartphone and has a mobile version. I work out at home, so I have a good additional device.
