Should I send this to my husband's cousin who is in the hospital?

Bless her heart. She was an Olympic class gymnast until she had an accident on the beam and broke her ankle when she was about 15. It was a major injury. She’s about 35 now. The doctor who treated her when she broke it declined to use antibiotics and it became badly infected. From a fb post: “Years ago, as an athlete, she suffered a horrible ankle injury, and if that wasn’t enough, she developed a post-op infection that a doctor ignored. We took her AMA to another hospital but Osteomyelitis had invaded her entire body, it was very touch and go for some time. Missy remained hospitalized for months.” It was a battle, but they saved her foot, but she has been in awful pain since. She finally made the decision to let them amputate, which they did, from the knee on down.

Her attitude has been amazing. She was scared, but looking on the bright side. Some of her fb posts read “I feel like I will be set free and I am ready to start this new life!” and “12 more days! Hmmm…..would rather be having a baby in 12 days, at least I know how to do that! OK so here is what I am going to do! Each day before my surgery I am going to list something that I am going to be able to do! Here goes for today! I will be able to RUN!! Also, it is very interesting all the stories my family and friends have told me recently about people they see with BKA (below the knee amputation)...Jacqie told me she saw a daddy carrying his two little ones into the Ranger game and he had a prosthetic and she didn’t even notice at first. Mark met a man yesterday who showed him all kinds of things he could do like jumping on two feet and he wanted Mark to go with him right then and there and meet the lady who makes his prosthetic legs! My Grandma would say this is an adventure! So that is how I am looking at it!”

As a “present” I’d like to send her This hilarious video of Flip Wilson as Geraldine, who is a nurse, and Bill Cosby playing a patient.

Would you appreciate something like that, or would it be in poor taste?

Of course send it! I don’t think it’s in poor taste at all, it’s funny, and laugher is incredibly healing. Even if she doesn’t crack a smile (which I know she will) she’ll appreciate your thinking about her.

And I wish this brave lady a bright, pain-free future.

Thanks! I’m sometimes PI without realizing it. I’m learning to step back and think sometimes.

You’re a-okay with me.

I don’t think it is in poor taste.

That poor girl. I hope she gets relief and her decision has good results. I guess the biggest fear, besides anything going wrong in the operating room, is if she continues to suffer with pain in the limb, the invisable limb, even after it is amputated. But, I would guess that has been discussed with her. I don’t know how often that occurs.

Did they sue the doctor that didn’t treat her infection appropriately? It’s just awful.

I haven’t asked them. The older I get the more I realize how OFTEN doctors F-up. Seriously. I used to feel sorry for them, having to carry all that malpractice insurance…but not any more.

@Dutchess_III Years ago my uncle was being sued, he is an opthamologist, and I asked him if he was worried about the suit. I remember him saying to me, “doctors make mistakes.” I was a teen, it didn’t even really register with me at the time.

Yes, I can understand that @JLeslie, but man. When everyone you know has suffered, or known of someone who suffered, or died, because of their “mistakes,” then it’s bad. I’ve known two people who had surgery here in town who died afterward from infection. Both young and otherwise healthy. I know of a 3rd who went to the Dr. who told her she was fine, sent her home, and she died that night of heart failure.
I, myself, almost died because the doctors here are utter idiots. I had a pharmacist here in town once who went off briefly, saying “If you want to DIE go to _____ clinic here in town!”
That wasn’t long after a kid died from a snake bite that they didn’t treat right.

@Dutchess_III I learned the hard way too. All sorts of medical mistakes I could site for myself, my family, and friends. In addition doctors sometimes are not making a msitake, but something bad still happens. When my uncle told me doctors make mistakes I didn’t understand it, now I realize it is so much worse than I could have imagined when I was a child. It’s stressful knowing it. Ignorance has some bliss in it.
