How does a company know when a credit card is from out of state?

Asked by Aster (20028points) May 10th, 2013

One of my daughters wanted me to call a company in her state so she could get something from my card but they knew the card was from out of their state and refused. HOw did they know that?

They can check the zip code associated with the credit card. The gas stations do it all the time by asking your zip code at the pump.
Did your daughter try to give her zip as part of the ordering process?

The information of where the card is from is encoded in the magnetic strip and the ZIP code is associated with the card.

Do you mean that your daughter wants to use your credit card to charge things?

My daughter uses my credit card all the time when she does business online. She is living in British Columbia and I am in NYS. We have never had any difficulty. It is a Cap. One Mastercard.

When there is an occasional big-ticket item, i simply call the 800 number and alert them to the larger-than-usual charge. It never seems to matter what state we are ordering from.

Why would any company care what state the card is from? I never heard of such a thing. A state in the United States? Used in the United States?
