Twin question?

Asked by chyna (51629points) May 11th, 2013

My friend has twin 2 year old boys and I’ve been invited to their birthday party. Do I get them two of the same gift or 2 different gifts? Which way would they be less likely to fight over the toy?
And do you have any recommendations for a gift? I have already bought them some books and puzzles. I was thinking of getting trucks for them.

You can’t go wrong with toy trucks. All little guys (and even some little girls) love them.

I’d ask the boys’ parents whether you should buy two of the exact, same thing or two items that are comparable but different. Some twins get upset if everything isn’t identical (“But his firetruck is better than my cement mixer!”), but some twins are more independent and do better if treated as individuals.

My brother-in-law had twin girls. If they didn’t get two of the same gift, they’d somehow decide which was the best; the other girl would cry and scream. But, frankly, those girls were (and still are) spoiled brats, which was no doubt a big part of the equation.

I would get different gifts. My daughter has two boys near the same age and they share all their toys anyway. They did get two sets of Incredible Hulk fists for their birthday (both in April so they shared a party) and that was great for boxing gloves. :-)

Ask the parents. My twin boys would be perfectly OK even if they got one gift for them to share. (Which they quite often got.)

Twins can be very different in this resoect, though.

I’ve gone to birthday parties for brothers that are only a year apart, and I typically got them the same toy, just a different color. Like a red truck and blue truck. Or a yellow water gun and a green water gun. Stuff like that.

Trucks are always good. Different colors and let them choose which one they want?

I have twin nephews. I think the gifts should be different (get one a blue truck and one a red truck) but from the same genre.

My first two girls were just 15 months apart, and could be very particular about this stuff. If I had it to do all over again, I’d never have even had different colored sippy cups, bowls, or towels, because there was constant squabbling over who got to have the ‘best’ one! We were just talking about this the other day, and even the girls couldn’t understand why they ever fought over such silly things as who got to use the pink washcloth.

It’d be easy to make every cup/bowl/towel exactly the same, but who wants multiples of the exact same toy? If you give each a different one, even if they’re only slightly different, they very well may declare one or the other ‘better’. It’s very hard to win this game! If it were me, I’d give them one joint gift with multiple parts they could use together, like a set of Duplo blocks or a bath toy set.

@augustlan GA If they’re both the same there wouldn’t be any squabbles. Better answer than mine.

Twins like to have their own stuff. So pick a theme and stick with it, but buy two different products. So different colored, equally cool trucks, good choice. Get essentially the same thing but with enough difference that they are better if you use them together.

I would find 1 a dump truck and the other a truck with an excavator arm if I had time to shop.

Conflicting responses! Buy the same or buy different!
I bought two of the same John Deere trucks, but I can take one back and exchange it.
Now I don’t know what to do.

@chyna Give them the same trucks. I was thinking as an adult when I said get different ones. As a kid I’d want the other guy’s stuff if it was different. Growing up sucks.

@chyna: They’re two. Keep the identical trucks and fill them with some small twigs, a little fine gravel, a bundle of dried pine needles tied with string, and a live frog.

John Deere trucks! Wow. You are more generous than me.
They probably have tons of stuff already. I would give them a couple of Koosh Balls in their favorite color if they have one.

Heard about this farmer that left his wife for a tractor?

He left her a John Deere letter.

^^^...Funnier in Dutch? It’s so annoying that you can now make bad jokes in my language.
