Problem curing extremely dry feet?

Asked by cutiepi92 (2252points) May 15th, 2013

I take pretty good care of my skin. I’m the type of person that will take a shower or bath, put on baby oil, pat dry, then lotion, then pants and long sleeves to let it soak in for a while. While the rest of my skin is on point, my feet are always a struggle. I use a foot file twice a week and have even done the thing where you put vaseline on your feet (after a shower) and put on thick socks overnight. Nothing works well. After I take the socks off, they are dry and ashen about an hour later. When I take a bath, even after I put lotion on them I can still see them getting ashy. Thirty minutes later, it’s like I never used lotion. They aren’t cracking or anything like you see on those pedegg commercials and whatnot, but skin that even looks dry REALLY bothers me. I don’t know what to do. It’s summer basically and I’d like to be able to wear sandals without worrying about my feet looking like I’ve been playing in flour (I have darker skin, so dryness shows up easily).

For those of you who do not know the perils of ashiness, never heard the term before, or don’t know what it looks like, http://24.media.tumblr.com/79275c2e9cdb145765298d7bde88e27c/tumblr_mhcmirc3Ll1rkqzxyo1_500.png this is what I’m talking about

This may seem off topic, but have you been tested for diabetes? Diabetics tend to have serious practically incurable cases of dry, cracked feet.

If you aren’t diabetic, maybe lotions and creams made for diabetics will still help.

@keobooks That’s exactly what I was thinking! Get tested @cutiepi92, my mom has the dry feet bad and just recently found out she was borderline diabetes.

I used to use vaseline with mixed results, I did have dry feet and hands, until I read that as a petroleum based products this didn’t hydrate skin but sealed and protected it from external factors that dried them out; dry climate, wind, abrasion, and so on.

I don’t know how true this is but now I use vita d and e oil when I feel dry and stay hydrated which hydrates my skin from with in.

I also been known to use some of those grocery store hair oils such as coconut oils suffused with herbs and such, marketed to people with course hair, for the quick omg I am ashy and I want to wear shorts or something quick fix. It works. Black or darker skinned people aren’t the only one who get ashy. And to us it feels just as visible and apparent.

Hypothyroidism is also a cause of seriously dry feet (heels) & elbows. I’d contact the doctor and have blood sugars & thyroid tested.

Try Nothing Like It at Cut Heal. Great stuff, my wife has used it and so have I for over fifteen years. I’m not connected to them, I’m only a satisfied customer for over fifteen years.

Are you drinking plenty of water? Hydration is important. I use to have the same problem years ago and it has gotten better with drinking plenty of water. Limit the amount of caffeine intake. I would also file down the rough spots when my foot is dry and then go over it with a smooth file to smooth out the rough edges created by the foot filer. Then I would shower and exfoliate my feet with sea salt. Right out of the shower I would then put on Dr. Scholls Overnight foot cream.

I would also put it on again in the morning. I would do this for a week and and file my heels on more time during the week. By drinking water and keeping up the routine of putting on foot lotion, I am able to maintain my heels and keep my feet smooth.

You simply have to baby your feet the way you make sure to always brush your teeth. We tend to ignore our feet until they need some tlc. They need it everyday. It isn’t that it is dry that is the problem but you should keep in mind that they take most of the punishment and we need them for walking, hopefully till the day we die. There is also another product that Scholls makes that is for skin repair. I would put both on at times. The skin repair is good to use after you file for the first week. Remember that you will scrape off old skin and the new skin underneath needs time to heal. It is why I do the filing in two days. If you remove it all at once your new skin will be really sensitive and you risk infection.

I don’t have the problem with my feet but I get the splits on the end of my thumbs. I use vasoline and that is what I was going to suggest but you say that doesn’t work. That seems to be the heavy duty stuff so I wouldn’t know what else to suggest. Although my husband uses Palmers Cocoa Butter salve on his legs to avoid the winter itchies and that works great for him. I guess it would be worth a try. I didn’t know about the medical problems that could contribute to dry feet. That is a lesson to me. But personally before I go to the doctor, I would try all other alternatives first because I hate going to the docs!

I’ve been to the doctor recently, plenty of tests done and what not. They said nothing is wrong with me, I am in perfect shape and health :/

As mentioned, perrolium products just create a barrier on your skin. They don’t really moisturize.

Also, wearing thick socks will pull the moisture away from your skin.

I also agree with making sure you are well hydrated.

but thanks everyone. I don’t drink much water (at all) so I probably will need to up my intake. Thanks for the product suggestions as well, I’ll try them out

Aloe is quite inexpensive by the jug .(Trader Joe’s)

After you shower or bathe, apply the aloe. Ideally you’d wear socks for just a bit to help the aloe stay in place. You can also soak your feet in the aloe for a few minutes, then rub it in.

Aloe is the main ingredient in most cracked foot lotions ;) Grape seed oil & coconut oil deeply penetrate the skin, both work well on feet.
