Do you use a water fountain for your pets? Which one?

Asked by Buttonstc (27605points) May 17th, 2013 from iPhone

Is there a particular reason you chose it?

What is its power source ?

Do your kitties like it and use it or turn up their nose at it?

I’ll be getting one soon. Any tips or advice?

I don’t bother. They are too much of a pain to clean. I leave several small saucers of fresh (changed daily) water around and often drop an ice cube into them in the afternoon.

My cat also loves to lap up clean cold water from the bottom of the tub, so whenever I am in that bathroom and Milo is hanging around (giving me that look) I throw several glasses of cold water from the tap onto the tub. (I use only vinegar and water for cleaning all bathroom fixtures, however, including inside toilet bowl.)

If I sit in my woods, MIlo wanders into the stream and drinks; god knows what’s in that water. Here He’s got his own custom-made staircase, you will see, obviating the need for him to wear his climbing boots (even though he does have four – also custom-made.).

We’ve tried a few. We have settled on a ceramic unit that can go in the dishwasher. We fill it with filtered water and don’t use the in-unit filter (which always seems to make them get moldy faster, it seems). When we wash the components in the dishwasher, we pit the water pump in a glass of hot water and vinegar. Then it needs to be very thoroughly rinsed before reinstalling. It was the store’s own brand of fountain, and I think it was PetCo.

Approx. how often do you have to run it through the dishwasher?

@Buttonstc – about every 2 weeks. When it gets low, I dump it out and rinse it and refill with more filtered water from our Brita pitcher.
