Is it true that once you try crack cocaine you can never stop ?

Asked by Aster (20028points) May 20th, 2013

I’ve read that once you smoke crack you’re a goner. It is so habit forming you can’t stop even after you’ve sold everything you own. Is that true? Or is it true only with people who are mentally unstable or depressed?

No, you can stop with difficulty, but it is highly addictive.

No. That’s hyperbole, kind of like how people claim that LSD makes you throw yourself out of windows…

No, it varies person to person.

I myself have an addictive personality, so I watched myself carefully when I tried any new drug growing up. And my mom’s a hippie and didn’t necessarily discourage experimentation so I’ve tried a lot of things.

I will admit that amphetamines are my dream drug, so I couldn’t do it recreationally like other people with less addictive personalities, or it would take me over, and that is unacceptable, so I just don’t do it at all. You can lose weight, you can get a lot of work done, and party all night and not get drunk, people even give it to you free so you’ll come party with them- I mean it seems great for a little while. And that’s how it sucks you in.

Then it goes downhill fast with interpersonal relationships, assocaties who live in that world, crime, your health deteriorates, it will affect your job and everything in your life.

One of my friends was on crack for 12 years. The way he sees it, he lost more than just those 12 years—before he started, he was earning over $75K a year, 25 years ago. That was gone quickly when he lost his job. He felt that moving to a different state to try to start over would work, but couldn’t catch his footing and started using again. After 4 states, he finally moved back to his home state.

He loved being high, only while high—he said it was the best he ever felt and it made everything else fall away emotionally. BUT. Everything else of value also did fall away, literally. For a while it was okay because the crack made him feel better. Then one day he just felt the deepest and most solid disgust he had ever felt in his life and quit cold turkey. He hasn’t touched crack in 13 years.

He regained his stability, has a great job/house/family, is quite rigid now about following a structure, eats very healthy and exercises for at least 2 hours every single day. He also depends on his faith in God to get him through. He struggles a bit with old issues that led him to become addicted in the first place, but works on them.

So, it can be done.

I do know another person, though, who is 54 and still has relapses every few months to years.

I know a few recovering addicts who smoked, ingested and shot-up crack. It is hyperbole.

It creates an addiction indeed, one that can be very difficult to stop, but it certainly isn’t impossible to do so.

I think that part of the reputation might be because of its price. It’s much cheaper than cocaine. And maybe, because of the price, it’s easier to tumble into an escalating habit, whereas the price of cocaine often ensures that it remains a party drug rather than becoming a habit.

I’ve known people who have stopped, so “never stop” isn’t accurate anymore than an alcoholic can never stop drinking.

I tried crack once, and it was very easy to stop doing. I didn’t even understand what the allure is, because the quality of the high was negligible. I was once given a baggie of cocaine, too, and I snorted the thing over the course of a week. But once it ran out, I never went back to it. The only “drug” that I repeatedly go back to is marijuana. The reasons for that is the quality of the high, and the nearly non-existent toxicity. The government lies about all illegal drugs, including the bad ones. That’s silly of the government, since it loses all credibility on everything.

@Aster I hope the answers above have convinced you not to give it a try.

HAHAHAA!!! Are you kidding @FutureMemory ? I don’t know anyone who sells it and I am sober and in a domestic environment. I’m not running the streets seeeking drugs. Oh, Lord.

FutureMemory's avatar

@Aster I don’t know anyone who sells it.

Lets keep it that way!!

Aster's avatar

How could I not keep it that way. Where would I go to seek them out ? Why would I seek them out ? Do we wish to ruin our lives?
This Indy 500 is dreadful; all the noise and excitement I can stand.

@Aster Where would I go to seek them out ?

Even if I knew I wouldn’t tell you. Resist temptation! Be strong!
