Can a pear shape wear a maxi dress?

So I’d like to wear maxi dresses, particularly because of the length. I have one and I keep trying them on at stores, but I feel like they just look nasty on me. I’m a pear shape, and the widest part of my hips/legs is really low. Like this ladies’. See how the widest part is below her hips?
When I wear a maxi dress it really shows. (like in the link above)
Is it pretty unflattering, or not so bad?
[Please don’t anyone give me the classic, “If you want to wear it, wear it.”, answer.]

Yes, but I would steer away from plain, solid colors. Look for a large scale pattern to draw attention away from your biggest section. I would also suggest you pick flowy dresses as opposed to stretchy jersey fabric since those materials tend to be tight and clingy on those areas of the body.
I have a pear shape. I don’t like the way maxi dresses look on me.
I do love long flowy dresses and skirts. the difference they a line or a classic cut defines the waist and hips making them an asset.
I also do the broom stick if they are shaped enough waist and flouncy like the slightest breeze will catch up. Think a bell shape.
@rosehips Yup. I wear lots of long tiered skirts.
I wouldn’t wear anything clingy like the girl in the photo, but something a little looser would be good. I would wear things with interest and color on top to bring attention away from the thighs. I have this same problem. I try to bring attention to my great boobs so no one pays attention to my thighs.
I think that a dark colored skirt in a non-clingy fabric would be fine. Judi’s fashion advice about the top also makes sense.
Don’t get obsessed about mini-flaws. We all have them.
How about an A-line or an empire waist maxi?
The fact that you’re wearing a blazer does a good job of drawing the eye upward. I’d keep it as part of the ensemble. I notice you’re pulling it around you, but that look is good. Perhaps a fitted jacket or sweater with a belt would help define the waist.
Yes, but balance it by wearing a jean jacket, for example. Don’t wear a long dress/skirt that’s straight, but more of an A-line (like @janbb suggests) so that it doesn’t cling to your thighs. I don’t think that cling is attractive and just looks like the skirt doesn’t fit – the first thing my eye goes to is her thighs :(
