Has anyone had any experience with Chantix when it comes to quitting smoking?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) May 20th, 2013

People, including myself, want to quit smoking. A jelly told me she had great results with Chantix. The disclaimers in the commercial scare me, though. I don’t want to have suicidal thoughts or actions or whatever!

No personal experience, but I wanted to throw it out that that it seems like nearly every medication has that as a possible side effect. They’re usually rare and most often occur in young users.

You sounded JUST LIKE a commercial, @Mariah! :D Thanks for your response. If all I had to deal with was the physical withdrawals I wouldn’t hesitate to try something. I just don’t know what can help with the….psychological aspects. Drinking my first cup of coffee/with a cigarette. Getting into the car/lighting a cigarette.

It’s called Champix in Canada and is fantastic- your cigarettes start to taste funny, you don’t think about having one for hours and then you quit!! I had some fantastical dreams and a little overactive intestinal activity at first.

I never smoked but I have relatives that used Chantix (a husband and wife) and they both were successful in quitting. They were in their 50’s around the time they did it and the man said he had really wild, vivid dreams and the woman was very happy to report that she could smoke for like a week and then you stop smoking and voila- no urge and no more cigarettes.

@Dutchess_III, as you know, I am a non-smoker thanks to Chantix. After my husband and I had not smoked for a week or so and were still taking the Chantix, I was having a lot of anxiety because of the very thing you said. I asked my husband if I would ever stop thinking about not smoking. Cigarettes were consuming my every thought. I wanted to have them OUT of my life.

May 1 was one year for me. I don’t think about cigarettes or smoking. Never. I would say for the first three or four months the mental part was still there for me. I would get out of the pool at night and get in the golf cart to head home and the very first thing I’d do was reach for a smoke. I’d get on the phone and head outside to the deck and look for my cigs.

I understand. I really, really do understand, but I promise you that feeling will subside and it is absolutely, without one doubt, the best thing you can do. Please, don’t let that little three inch piece of paper and tobacco rule your life. It is killing you my precious friend. I was paying a company outlandish money to kill myself. How stupid is that?

I brushed my teeth constantly at first to kill the urge to smoke. I hated the way my mouth tasted after I smoked that that was a bery good way to put off the urge and to occupy my hands and mouth until the urge passed.. Which by the way it does.

If you need help, encouragement or anything else; don’t hesitate to ask. Before you pay for a prescription, which is very expensive, look at the Chantix website and see if they are still offering coupons.

Thank you @bkcunningham. Like I said, I did quit for 8 years but for some reason I just don’t know if I could do it again. But I have to.

Dutchess_III's avatar

How expensive is very expensive?

bkcunningham's avatar

It was well over $400 for me and the same for my husband. The prescription is for 12 weeks. http://www.chantix.com/how-to-take.aspx

@Dutchess_III Chantix does work, it blocks the receptors in your brain from getting ‘joy’ when you smoke (that’s how my dr described it.) I had no side effects except my sleep was a little restless. It didn’t work for my husband though (pre-seizure.)

*I hate to say this, but I will. If you know anyone on MediCaid, they get all their smoking cessation items free or for like $2, so have one of them get you some Chantix or Nicotrol or whatever you choose.

You wicked, wicked girl @KNOWITALL!

The biggest thing I’m ascared of is getting an erection lasting more than 12 hours. :( Yikes!

Dutchess_III's avatar

In the big picture, though, @bkcunningham, that’s pretty damn cheap when you think about how much you spend on cigarettes…at LEAST that much a month for me.

bkcunningham's avatar

We smoked Marlboro Lights. We were paying about $55 a cartoon and bought 2.5 or 3 cartoons a week. So, yes. Much cheaper.

I asked my husband to confirm how much we were smoking-just a year ago. Both of us looked at each other in disbelief at the amount we spent on cigarettes. It is scary to think about being so addicted to such an unhealthy, horrible object. I really thank God that we stopped smoking. You can do this, @Dutchess_III.

I’m not ascared (sic) of an erection that last more than 12 hours. If you find one, give me a call. I know what to do with it!

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’ll UPS it to ya, @bkcunningham!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Hey…does it help with that horrible, cranky bitchy feeling you have in that first couple of weeks.

@bkcunningham Naughty girl – lol

Yes, @Dutchess_III. You don’t have the desire to smoke. It doesn’t alter your personality or make you feel doped up. It just seems that you all of a sudden realize you don’t have a desire to smoke and that smoking isn’t doing anything for you except satisfying your oral fixation or giving you something to do with your hands. I found that Tootsie Pops helped in the beginning, but then I realized I didn’t want to replace one habit with another. I wanted to be rid of the oral and hand fixations as well. Chantix was a miracle drug for me.

I used flower seeds in the shell. I get the oral fixation and also the habit of leaning over and putting the empty shells in the ash tray. Major salt over load, though, but it helped.

Oh, and @bkcunningham That thing I’m going to send UPS…it doesn’t come with batteries so you’ll have to buy some. Triple D’s, I believe.
