Duster coats - how do they work?

Asked by fremen_warrior (5510points) May 22nd, 2013

Can someone explain to me how duster coats work? I mean it’s a full coat that you wear during the summer… What am I missing here? Are they really light or something? I am curious and I don’t know anyone who owns one, so I have nobody to turn to for an explanation irl. Cheers!

From Wikipedia:

“The original dusters were full-length, light-colored canvas or linen coats worn by horsemen to protect their clothing from trail dust. These dusters were typically slit up the back to hip level for ease of wear on horseback and were the recommended “uniform” for Texas Rangers. Dusters intended for riding may have features such as a buttonable rear slit and leg straps to hold the flaps in place. For better protection against rain, dusters were made from oilcloth and later from waxed cotton.”

Says nothing about how they (help one) handle very hot summer days…

@fremen_warrior They don’t. That’s not what they’re for.

Also worn by both drivers and passengers oif the early touring cars that were open to the elements…also known as roadsters.

Here’s a beauty

Dust always trumped temperature gradients just as goggles were worn to keep insects and gravel from eyes.

They aren’t made for hot summer days. They are for rain and wind/dust. I’ve seen a lot of them. My mother has one for when she goes on horse trails.

Ok, thank you all for clarifying then. @gailcalled sweet ride, wish I could afford one of these :-)

I have a “Drizabone” and it is very heavy with an oil impregnated heavy cloth. It would be hard to use in the summer unless it was cold enough out. It sort of is like a trench coat.

Duster Coat is a waterproof coat also called as ‘trenchcoat’ which is made of oilcloth or waxed cotton.It will help you during rainy days to avoid being drenched.
