Duster coats - how do they work?

Can someone explain to me how duster coats work? I mean it’s a full coat that you wear during the summer… What am I missing here? Are they really light or something? I am curious and I don’t know anyone who owns one, so I have nobody to turn to for an explanation irl. Cheers!
