How could a soldier get hacked up and killed by people with machetes and butcher knives?

Apparently it happened fairly close to his barracks and there were many witnesses. Why didn’t anyone help him? And why didn’t anyone tackle and hold onto the one who gave the speech, while covered with blood from the butchering, about allah telling them to kill infidels?

They very likely staked out the barracks & struck out of nowhere, nothing anyone could’ve done for the poor guy. He’d already been mowed down by their car & passers-by initially assumed they were tending to him as an accident victim.
No one could possibly have anticipated what was to follow, a barbaric, cowardly act of sheer brutality, indeed, two women pleaded with them to stop, even approaching the stricken victim in the middle of the road, with no thought of their own safety.
Armed officers were on the scene within minutes & did what they had to do, considering the incident took place right near a primary school, things could’ve gotten a whole lot worse.
One woman saw what was happening and approached the man with the machete to try and calm the situation and get as much information as she could. When asked why she did it and if she was scared she said that she would rather put herself at risk than the children that were around at the time. By trying to tackle someone that is waving a machete around you are just going to make them angrier and risk more lives so I think what this woman did took some real balls.
I am just amazed though that this could happen in the middle of the day in the midst of a busy street. And people were filming the woman who was talking to the guy who was covered with blood and still held the knife. Why was this woman talking politely to a crazy man? I think I would have had to intervene. I could not stand by and listen to the guy and not try to take him down. Are people becoming so complacent about these attacks? It seems to me that unless children are involved, shootings in the USA and terrorist acts in general are greeted with a ho hum response, unless children are involved. @Leanne1986 I appreciate your opinion but it seems to me that is what is wrong, you can’t make nice with a mad man and if 4 or 6 of the men or even women standing around filming had taken the guy down his machete and anger would have been futile.
@rooeytoo I wonder if they were unsure whether the men had any more weapons on them, like a gun and so wanted to keep them calm just in case. I don’t know, just a guess. I think it’s very easy to say what we would do in a situation when we are just watching it happen on TV but until something like that happens in front of your own eyes I don’t think any of us know what we would do. You are right that we appear to have become numb to these situations though. In the footage I saw of this man talking to a camera with bloodied hands, holding a machete and a body lying dead in the road, there were still people ambling around seemingly oblivious to what was going on. That’s worrying.
