Are there any songs about airplanes?

Asked by LostInParadise (32183points) May 25th, 2013

There is no shortage of songs about trains. It is practically a genre of country and western music. The only song about airplanes that I can think of is Leaving On a Jet Plane, popularized by Peter, Paul and Mary. Are there any others? And why are there so many more songs about trains? Do they seem more romantic? Do they have a greater presence, especially at railroad crossings.

Steve Miller did one “Jet Airliner”

“Fly Me to the Moon”? It doesn’t specify airplane, but you’d have to get there somehow. I think it was written before space travel was a possibility.

Sinatra’s “Come Fly With Me” and these

One of my all time favorites, City of New Orleans sung by Arlo Guthrie.

“Take the last train to Clarksville” the Monkees.

Oh shiiiiiiiiit!! by John Denver.

Screw airplanes; airships are far more romantic, as are pirates.

@ucme What, no Lynyrd Skynyrd?

There’s gotta be a country song where planes get a mention somewhere…
“I’m flying to my baby, with these wings of love flappin in my heart
Maybe i’m just plane crazy, but these engines sound like a fart.”

Early Morning Rain

Hear the mighty engines roar
See the silver wing on high
She’s away and westward bound
Far above the clouds she’ll fly
Where the mornin’ rain don’t fall
And the sun always shines
She’ll be flyin’ o’er my home
In about three hours time

And Arlo Guthrie sang this at Woodstock

Coming into Los Angeles
Bringing in a couple of keys
Don’t touch my bags if you please
Mister Customs Man

And the Beatles Back In The USSR with actual jet engine noises!

Maybe not the romantic ballads you had in mind, but the Air Force has a couple of songs…

Air Force Hymn
Air Force Song
the older version

Thanks all!

@Sunny2 , That may be a bit of a stretch. but I see your point. Flying was meant in a more metaphorical sense, but the metaphorical comparison was probably to airplanes.

@CWOTUS , I was thinking that the air force must have an anthem, but I did not know what it was. Thanks for the reference.

Hooray, no one mentioned it already!
Learn to Fly by the Foo Fighters. The video is hilarious, Dave Grohl crossdressing, and Jack Black is in there. For some reason I really needed to listen to this song last year when I was flying across the Atlantic for the first time in many years.
I remember that this was one of many songs banned on radio (by the FCC? I can’t recall) in the U.S. after September 11th.

If it’s a country music song you’re wanting, here’s Silver Wings” penned and sung by the great Merle Haggard. It has all the appropriate melancholy of a classic country song. Enjoy

I refuse to go there on general principle alone, cuntry muzak is the last thing I want, thanks, but no thanks :)

Well, pardon me all to death; sorry I misinterpreted your statement . You said that somewhere there must be a country music song about airplanes so I figured I’d steer you to the first one that popped into my head..I was just trying to be helpful to you.

But, don’t worry; believe me, I won’t make that mistake a second time :)
