Most other Q&A sites get flooded with questions.

Fluther is a relatively small site.

There’s probably only a few hundred active members…maybe more (or less) depending on your definition of active.

Also, quality over quantity has always been a strong goal here. Members are limited to I think 3 questions per day.

^ All of that, plus we don’t particularly care to inform adults on their reproductive functions or “interpret” the “deeper meaning” of their REM sleep patterns.

Any idiot can answer a question, but people who are analytical enough (and curious enough) to ASK questions are harder to find.

Do you really want to be in a trash-heap like Askville?

janbb's avatar

We used to have more new members and get a lot more questions. It is a shame.

ucme's avatar

Because we’re not most other question sites, fluther is unique in that, err…just a second, erm…oh it just is alright!! :)

marinelife's avatar

You could ask some.

We are also limited to three questions a day to make sure people don’t “waste” space by asking hundreds of stupid questions.

As @FutureMemory so aptly put it, Fluther values quality over quantity. We could very easily be flooded with lots of questions that have been asked and answered over and over, but we prefer for Fluther to be set apart from other Q&A sites and be a place for thoughtful, insightful, and helpful discussions. Stick around, I think you’ll grow to appreciate the quality.

If we wanted to we could be inundated with questions about how to go back to 2000 on the internet!

Yes, @janbb, but what we have, as Spencer Tracy said in Pat and Mike, is “cherce.”

@marinelife they just did.

The questions on Fluther are usually more thought provoking. If something is “Google-able” then users usually will go that route first.

flutherother's avatar

They’ve all been asked before.

rojo's avatar

Most Jellies already have all the answers.

While we have always valued quality over quantity, there was a time when this place was hopping. We used to be one of the first hits on Google for just about any question you could ask. At our peak, we had over 1 million unique visits per month, which led to a lot more questions, as you can imagine.

Then Google changed its algorithm, and we became a lot harder to find. C’est la vie.

any idiot can answer a question? Shyit answers like this one tends to turn off potential newcomers before they can get comfortable first. I just think that a few of you could maybe try a little harder to get over yourselves?

Is that question suitable enough for ya?

josie's avatar

Political correctness, and grammar and spelling standards. These days, the latter alone will limit participation.

woodcutter's avatar

I always thought we all could get spellcheck to solve that.

We did have a lot more activity some years back. Took me a whole evening to get through three to four pages of questions. Now it’s like, I’m done going through them before I’m even sitting down. As Auggie explained, Google is responsible. Now we’re all tucked away and lost in some dark, ungoogled corner of the intrawovenz. Sucks ass.

Although it must also be said, a lot of members have left of their own accord. The site isn’t for everyone, some people got too addicted and left, others got fed up, others had other shit to do…you know, the general Q&A site motel syndrome. However, even when we had a lot of people, we weren’t as big as huge cyclops like AssBag or Fookj00 Answers, so people leaving coupled with Google blaming us for the Holocaust does cause some damage. It’s a difference which is easily noticed when compared to bigger places.
And it sucks. Ah wants mah Fluther big and thriving, damnit!

Please don’t make this sound like we’re an elitist group and only take questions from people who meet our standards.

A lot of the drop off was due to google mis-categorizing fluther. Fluther answers dropped off the google radar (and that was how I discovered the Jelly commune)

We are not a bunch of shithead-know-it-alls.

Come in. Ask anything (just spell it correctly) and you are welcomed.

ucme's avatar

@Blueroses I reckon there’s an element of elitism here, pathetic as that is, they’re only questions dummies!
I enjoyed your post, partly because it was right on the money, but mostly because it was you :)

rojo's avatar

@Blueroses you left out the word “all” as in “We are not all a bunch….....”

bob_'s avatar

@Blueroses “Ask anything (...)”

What color of panties are you wearing?

Seek's avatar

@bob_ If you don’t post that, I will.

Blueroses's avatar

@bob_
Eres muy divertido y te adoro

I have a few a barn burners, but there are a few that I’m either afraid to ask on here, or ones that I don’t think would take off well on this site. I post on two other Q & A sites besides this one, and I’m a member of four blogging sites so I attempt to ask questions which I feel are more of a fit for each site. Two of those sites get really deep into philosophy, religion, astronomy, theism, etc so I really need to be in the mood to post on those ones, lol.
