Would you let your 13 year old wear this?

Asked by Feta (930points) May 28th, 2013

I stumbled across this picture Johnny Depp’s daughter (on the right)...

She’s only 13.

And this isn’t an isolated incident…

I’m 17 and I just started wearing shorts like that.

I’m not a prude, I love the grunge scene, but personally, it would be a cold day in Hell before I let a 13 year old wear something like that.

Personally I like the red mini dress, but showing abs at that age is a little much, and the shorty shorts are a little too short, but I’m in a much more conservative area.

I’m sure Johnny is not the typical dad either, he is a very independant thinker. She is gorgeous though!

That’s pretty gross, but I recall girls in middle school wearing equally or more gross things.

When I was in middle school, I remember the girls folding the waistband of their gym shorts until they looked like underwear. Is it appropriate? Maybe not. Is Johnny Depp’s daughter the only one? No.

On a side note, I think both outfits are super unflattering and she should eat a few cheeseburgers, because she looks emaciated.

I’m not hating on Johnny Depp’s kid. I know there’s more…when I go to summer camp they’re everywhere.
This was just surprising because I thought the 90’s grunge trend was more for older girls/women.

I’m glad I never had any daughters. I’ve seen pictures of myself at that age, wearing similar clothing.

No, I wouldn’t. It’s not so much about the individual pieces, either, but the overall look. Disregarding the hideous shoes…any of the clothing pieces could be made more age appropriate with just a little tweaking. The shorts would be fine with a shirt that covered more, and the shirt would be fine with shorts that covered more or jeans. The dress would be okay with a cardigan or jacket. The combo of red and black looks harsh and too old for her, but in a different color combination it would be better.

All that said, I am way more conservative than my mother was. I was wearing a very tiny string bikini at that age. Wayyyy inappropriate.

I’m 58 and my daughter won’t let me wear the cutoffs I wore in college. Just because they have frayed to the point where the pockets hang out. I mean cummon!! It’s not fair…

livelaughlove21's avatar

@Feta In what way is this 90’s grunge? I see high-waisted jean shorts with a bare midriff and a red dress. What automatically makes that grunge?

rojo's avatar

Mein Gott! Those shoes are hideous! All of them!

marinelife's avatar

I don’t think there is anything wrong with either outfit.

ragingloli's avatar

I see no problem. Even Misty from Pokémon wears this.

But I would definitely ban those shoes.

ucme's avatar

My daughter’s 13 & i’d have no problem with her wearing either of those, it’s not about what you wear, more how you wear it, look at the big picture rather than the fine detail.
The shoes though, bloody awful look.

Are we taking about the girl in the black outfit?
Is it a bathing suit under her shirt?
Is she at a beach?
The other girl looks normal wearing the shorts and tank top for this area.
The red skin tight dress, well she appears not too comfortable as she is pulling the dress up to cover herself more. Should had worn a bollerro jacket or something?

I think both outfits that Johnny Depp’s daughter is wearing are fine, but her friend in the first pic appears to be missing a pair of shorts or something. Would I let my 13-year-old daugher dress like that? Only if we went on holiday somewhere warm. If she dressed like that round here she’d get hypothermia,

_Whitetigress's avatar

They just look like typical LA, San Diego (So. Cal) dressed in my opinion. I’d prefer, if I ever had a little girl they wouldn’t depend on all that skin for “recognition” or attention.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

What do either of those pictures have to do with “grunge?” They look like “California relaxed kid” outfits to me. And they look fairly typical for tween/teen clothes on a warm, sunny day.

syz's avatar

No. It’s age-inappropriate.

_Whitetigress's avatar

@Feta It’s not unusual at all for So Cal girls to dress this way. If you think this is prude, you’d you’d bleed out from your chin when your jaw drops from shopping along any of the coastal stores in San Diego or Los Angeles. Girls walk in stores with full on bathing suits! It’s really nothing. It’s the same for almost any other warm climate coastal/beachy towns.

Feta's avatar

I was just looking at her friends though, they’re dressed more modestly. I don’t really care. Though I lived in a warm coastal town for much of my life and never saw a 13 year olds midriff outside of a swimsuit.

And sorry for using the term “grunge” inappropriately (jeez).

I was just taking off the fact that she looks like a street urchin and is wearing T.U.K.s.
If this isn’t a subform of grunge…what is?

Adagio's avatar

@livelaughlove Emaciated? She’s just a 13-year-old girl, a physically underdeveloped 13-year-old girl, nothing unusual about that, I was much the same myself at that age.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

I like what the bodyguard is wearing. But I don’t think it’s appropriate for him to be enjoying ice cream with the girls while on the job.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@Adagio I’m aware of her age. Regardless, she’s too thin. You don’t have to be an adult to be underweight.

jca's avatar

I don’t think of her as too thin or dressed inappropriately. I remember what I was wearing when I was that age, which was halter tops (this is around mid 1970’s) or tank tops and shorts.

As for her weight, go into any Junior’s section of a department store and the clothes are specifically made for skinny girls who are size 0. Most young girls are growing up (taller, heightwise) and not yet out (development) and so they have skinny hips, small chests and long limbs.

I don’t think of the red dress as “grunge.” Nothing grungy about that. The shorts, not so much either.

Just my opinions.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I was definitely that thin at her age, I had a very high metabolism and ate like a horse so I wouldn’t betting that she probably eats a lot of cheeseburgers! Regardless, I think it is wrong to pass judgement on someone’s weight unless you actually know their eating habits.

The outfits don’t bother me, I wore similar clothes at that age (on the odd days we actually saw any sunshine!!!). The situation is important here though, if she is wearing this on a very warm day for a casual, social occasion then it’s fine. If she’s on her way to the opera, maybe not!!!!! It’s all about the bigger picture in my opinion.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@Leanne1986 Chill, it was just a comment. No need to make a federal case of it. You don’t have to think she’s too thin because I do.

OpryLeigh's avatar

@livelaughlove21 Chill?! Haven’t heard someone say that in ages!!! Sorry if my answer sounded like a “federal case”, it wasn’t intended that way and I am certainly not unchilled right now. I was just joining the conversation like others have.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Have you ladies seen Vanessa, her mom? Very petite and small. My husband eats like a horse constantly and weighs 140 lbs, it’s ridiculous how fast some people’s metabolism’s are.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@Leanne1986 Oy…I wasn’t being serious.

FluffyChicken's avatar

No, there’s no way I would let my kids wear shoes like that.

Curiousteenager0420's avatar

In the first picture, the girl on the left, the one with the Misfits shirt on, has gorgeous thighs.
