Do you think people run over armadillos on purpose?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) May 28th, 2013

For many years now I’ve noticed the little guys making their way north, from Texas. About 5 years ago I saw the first one in southern Kansas, abut 15 miles from here. The other day I saw my first one here in town, on a residential street.

The thing is, all the ones I see are smashed flat by cars. There are more armadillos, smashed, by the side of the road, than any other animal. I’ve never seen a live one.

Are people running over them on purpose?

Yes. I’ve seen people swerve to hit turtles. People are dicks.

Yes… I’ve seen people run over snakes in North Dakota… length wise. I second that people are dicks.

Texas armadillo with rosemary and thyme

Serve with a chilled, dry white wine and steamed rice.

Being slow moving and having bad eyesight make armadillos hard to miss, whether you’re trying to or not.

I’d like to think not…but some people do purposely kill animals on the road for the lolz. Not everyone, but enough. Never seen it happen no, but I don’t find it hard to believe. seen other shit though

I third the motion; people are dicks.

It’s mildly upsetting to me when I scrape the dead carcasses of hundreds of flies off my number plate, save the armadildo…wait.

@Dutchess_III
You need that book. If you had that book you would have learned that the startle reflex of an armadillo is to jump straight up into the air, usually to bumper height. And that although they are relatively fast their instinct in the face of danger is to roll up into a ball with only their tought outer shell exposed and, while that might confuse a fox, it does nothing for an Audi.

@Sunny2 Hmmm. Are armadillos vegetarians? People don’t eat carnivores. I’ll go check.

Checking: “Armadillos are found primarily in South and Central America, particularly in Paraguay and surrounding areas.” Didn’t even mention Kansas as usual….. They’ve come a long way, baby. Long way just to get smashed on the road.
They eat grubs and are used as musical instruments. “Look Herb! Hit that armadillo and see if it plays Smoke On The Water!”

Poor dillos. :(
