Do you pay your bills with checks or do you pay them all online, if that business has that option?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) May 29th, 2013

I pay all my bills online except 1 business that does NOT have an online payment option. Kinda sucks. That one I send them a check. I rarely use checks anymore.

I pay everything online, except my power bill and my rent. Rent is paid in person, power bill through Amscot, because the Amscot billpay fee is less than the online billpay fee through the power company, and it would cost more in gas to drive directly to the power company than either of those options. I do not send money through the post.

I use my bank’s online bill pay service. The very few places that don’t take the payment electronically are sent a check through bill pay. Typically, I write checks to pay the quarterly pest spraying service, the annual recycling bill and any taxes that we might owe. (This year, state, federal and the property taxes on a vacation home.) Oh! I wrote a check to the DMV for the car registration.

I rarely write checks anymore, partly because they’ve gotten outrageously expensive, but mostly because I love the convenience of online banking. I’ve never had any problems paying bills and doing other banking transactions online; I just keep an email folder called “online receipts” which I faithfully keep updated.

I pay all but one of my bills by check over the phone with an automated phone system. Our water company only has the option of sending a payment through the mail or visiting their office, so I send a check in the mail.

I pay almost everything on line. The few exceptions are the guy who mows my lawn I give him cash), the one who plows my drive, my handy person, and a landscaping firm in another city who mows a memorial pocket park that our family maintains on a public bike trail.

Each month I probably use three checks, just enough to add another layer of bookkeeping.

However, I charge as much as I can to a Master Card credit card.

People still use checks?

Checks for me mostly. Yes @uberbatman some of us still do!!

Most places I pay each month still charge a fee of some kind to use auto-deduct.

I use checks to pay the bills that I can’t pay for free through my bank or online. My apartment complex has a billing system that probably saves them a lot of money…but it charges a $25 “convenience fee” for paying bills online, from checking or with a card. I figured that ordering a new box of checks would save me money in the long run.

I handle almost all of my finances online and have automatic deductions. I do write a check for my rent each month and for some dr. appointment co-payments.

I pay all my bills online, along with the rest of my banking. I haven’t used a cheque since we moved into our new house, almost 4 years ago.

We pay as many of our bills online as possible. We usually use our credit card, and earn free motel rooms every other month or so. We pay off the balance every month as well. We put the money for every bill and purchase into a savings account, so it earns interest until we pull it out to pay off the credit card bill.

My husband, sister-in-law and nephew are trying to teach their 88 year old mother how to pay her bills online, but it is proving more difficult than they expected. The 20 year old nephew goes over to her apartment every few days to help her.

I couldn’t even tell you where my cheque book is.

I just had to purchase a new check registry. I believe that the old one lasted over ten years.

What’s a check?

I pay all my bills either by regular direct debit or by card (online, in person or over the phone). I haven’t written a cheque in maybe three years.

For those of you who pay rent, are you able to pay it online or by automatic payment plan? I always have to write checks.

I pay cash, and make my landlord come to me to get it. Like hell I’m relying on the postal service. I don’t even have a checking account. Prepaid debit card with direct deposit. Who needs more than that?

Before we moved, I was in an apartment for 9 years. We could only pay by cheque or cash. However, we could do post-dated cheques for up to 3 months. That made it a bit easier. I never mailed mine. I always dropped them off at the manager’s office.
