What people are really in the minority?

Asked by poisonedantidote (21680points) May 29th, 2013

I was just watching a video online, were Chinese people are referred to as a minority. In the context of the video, it is correct, there are fewer Chinese people round here than Spanish people, however, there are only about 40 million Spanish people, but well over a billion Chinese people.

It dawns on me, that calling one group or another a minority, in a local or national context, is kind of silly, in a world where you can get to the other side of the planet in less than a day.

So, who are the real minorities? If we look at all our demographics on a global scale, who are the real minorities?

World class elite athletes, i’m talking about those who transcend their sport.
It’s like they’re of a different breed, so impressive.

Brian Fisher on “Focal Point” (AFA) this afternoon said that, because of our low birthrate, abortion and immigration policy of letting anyone come in, everyone in the United States was going to be a minority by 2040.

Not sure how he came by this little gem of wisdom but I thought I would pass it on.

I thought white/caucasian people were the minority. There are more non-white than white people on the planet.

Other than that, I think nature and wildlife are becoming a minority.

@Seek I’m both of those.

Whether or not a group is a minority is all about location and circumstance.

I’m at least one of them, depending on your personal definitions.

The minority is someone who has to learn two different ways of communicating in the culture they live in. I guess we are all minorities if we nake the definition that broad. But generally the culture where everything is taken for granted.

@tinyfaery, I was thinking the same thing. It dependson your location and circumstance. I’m a minority here. I’m also a minority in my local community because of my age. I’m in the majority because of my gender. It is all relative.

Everyone is a foreigner in most countries of the world. Everyone is part of a minority somewhere in the world.

If you’re a white male in America, what do you have to be afraid of?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@fulloflove96 Gay people, SSM, terrorists, female empowerment, minorities taking your job for less pay, etc… I’m not saying I feel this way, but I’ve heard a lot of white males whining about these things.

Unbroken's avatar

If you are a white male try going to a native village, or the reservation.

I have made uncomfortable by stares in certain neighborhoods in various cities or towns…
