How many GB are used just by being logged in to FB?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47069points) May 31st, 2013

My husband has a $25 data package on his phone. He gets, I think, 4 GB for that $25 (or maybe 2. I don’t remember.) Well, he went over on his data minutes on the last bill. We’re trying to figure out how. He doesn’t post that much, but he does share pics and posts sometimes (not excessively tho,) and spends quite a bit of time just perusing.

So is he using GB just by being logged in?

Some apps update in the background and can suck your data limit dry.

Some of my apps are “WiFi only” by choice, and I have unlimited data still.

Definitely not on the order of gigs. Probably a few kilobytes.

I have unlimited data but I only use about 500 mB (half a gig) in one month. And I use the internet on my phone a LOT.

So what could be sucking his data?
What kind of apps, Trop Willie?

Had to leave for a appointment. I’m back.

“Facebook Messenger” is running constantly not just when you are on FB. Forgetting to shut off games like “Jail Escape“eat in data allowance. Movies and sports eat up data
There are more ideas and an article from PCWorld on data caps.

I don’t think he watches movies or sports. As far as I know, he simply looks around on fb, and shares things once in a while.

Thanks for the link. I’ll check it out.

What is the difference in usage between uploading a picture and just sharing one?

If the looking around FB includes videos and large files. . . If you have and iPhone there’s a data monitor app already on the cell.

The Upload / Share of photos are the same. If it is a video yikes !

K. I’ll let him know all of this. Thank you.

Checking email and using any apps that connect to the web will go towards data allowances – pretty much anything you do beyond talking on the phone (minutes) and texting / SMS (messages) is using your data unless you are on WiFi. The best way to know for sure is to ask your specific cell service carrier.
