What is the proper way to write a book title for a book report?

Asked by pcmonkey (427points) June 3rd, 2013

I’m writing a book report on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey. I’m typing a word document and as the title of the report I want it to say something along the lines of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” by Sean Covey, Book report by me. But what is the correct way to do this? Underline, italicized, quotation marks, commas? Should the authors name be under the title and should I just put my name in the corner of the paper? Please help.

Quotations marks around the title followed by by Sean Covey. Next lone you name and the date.

If the report is for a class, you should ask your teacher. Individual teachers will often have different formatting requirements, and unfortunately they won’t always tell you up front or provide a style-guide.

Otherwise I recommend the use of a publisher’s stylebook such as that of Associated Press or the New York Times.

I don’t know if you can find those for free on the nets, so here’s this:

There isn’t a single correct way. There are many style guides, each with its own rule – as @rexacoracofalipitorius has demonstrated. Check with your teacher to find out which he or she prefers. Or if it is too late to do that, then just choose one method and be consistent throughout your report.

Italicization is a very common method… so underlining is also common. The reason for this is that on old-fashioned typewriters, the “shorthand” for italics was the underline. In other words, if you’re using Word or some other word processing program, then just use italics instead of underlining.
