Does your dog really seem to be concerned when you are sad, crying or really upset?

Asked by ZEPHYRA (21750points) June 4th, 2013

Have you noticed the dog coming over to comfort you or be close to you during such times, or does it just carry on as if nothing happened?

My dog comforts me.

A few years ago my s/o lost her mother. The next Mother’s Day I was working in the yard and my s/o came outside and started crying. I let the dogs out and they both ran to her immediately. They ignored me completely.

Mine seems giddily happy to lick away tears. She may be a psychopath. I love her anyway.

Yes. My previous dog, Gus, would comfort me. When I was really sick, bald and bandaged from multiple brain tumours over the years, he’d come lay against my head on the pillow. He never did that beforehand.
My current dog, Piper, comforts me as well. When we first got her, I was still crying a lot over the loss of Gus. She’d come over and sit on whatever part of my torso was available. Oh and she recently started waking me during my nightmares. This is an entirely new and interesting experience.

My boy does. He loves me but he seems to have a sense of my mood. He is such a cuddleybumkin. Perhaps he just loves cuddles!

Sure. Cats have that capacity as well (although it goes against their style to advertise it); I even had a pony once who showed empathy when I was upset. Critters definitely have souls… they may not be of the human variety, but they’re there.

GA to @Bellatrix for “cuddleybumkin”... LOL

I have had two cats that would come as soon as they sensed I was upset. They wouldn’t leave my side if I was crying. They seemed to be worrying and mothering over me.

My dog shows concern by putting her chin on my leg and looking up at me with the sweetest, most pitiful eyes.

I haven’t got time to be sad, but when I laugh she gets all excitable, jumps up at me & dishes out a few high fives…she’s actually staring at me now as I type this & gave me a wink & a nod of agreement, not even joking.

My old dog did. He would come up and lick the tears off my face or stand real close, he was a saintly fellow and I miss him every day.

I haven’t really noticed this in my Jack Russell, Bella as she tends to be at my side at all times regardless of how I am feeling. She gets anxious if I am obviously stressing about something but she’s not really a “comforter” and her constant closeness is for her own sense of security, not mine, I feel. My grandmother has heart problems that often meant she couldn’t get out of bed. Her Collie, Fozzie, (who passed away a couple of years ago) would know, even when she was asleep that an episode was coming on and wake her up gently. He would then stay by her side without leaving to eat, drink or go to the toilet until she could get up which was sometimes days later.

Yea even when I’m like throwing up an stuff she would sit by me the whole time.
She won’t let anyone near me if I’m sick either. If I’m upset or something she nuzzles my hand and it makes me laugh and stuff.
