Can you recommend any good books about (or including) phonology?

Asked by fundevogel (15511points) June 12th, 2013

Seriously. I have this feeling like looking at the international phonetic alphabet ought to be more helpful than confusing. And its about time I knew a velar from a fricative from glottal stop. And you, palatalization. I swear I know what you feel like in my mouth, but I still haven’t the faintest clue what you are.

Peter Ladefoged’s A Course in Phonetics

I learned in an undergrad linguistics course that used this text: Contemporary Linguistics by O’Grady et al. (well, actually from an older, Canadian version).

Here’s an older edition that you can “Look Inside”.

@fundevogel, you sound more like you’re looking for phonetics information than phonological information, so I agree with @morphail. Lagefoged’s book is really good.

This is one of my favorite phonetics web sites: University of Iowa Phonetics Click on the American flag, and have fun!

Bruce Hayes’ Introductory Phonology is a good starting point. And don’t be fooled by the low star rating on Amazon; those are due to people giving it a low rating because of a problem with the Kindle edition. The book itself is good, though :)

@linguaphile good distinction, thanks for pointing it out.

This is why I love you bunch. Thanks so much for the recommendations. I’m going to check which are availble through my library network.

Do you want a more detailed explanation of the processes of phentics/phonology, or do you just want a quick-and-dirty guide to the IPA as it relates to a particular language/dialect?

If you want to practise rounding your vowels and sounding like you’re from Leatherhead, Surrey, then you could look at this:

And play around with this:

I challenge you not to spell rude words!
