Is it significant if a B-complex vitamin stains urine?

Asked by DigitalBlue (7105points) June 13th, 2013

My sister told me that if my urine is brighter yellow than usual when taking my B-Complex vitamins that it means that I don’t need them.

Personally, I feel a tremendous difference in my mood and energy when I include them in my vitamin regimen compared to when I don’t. Could be placebo, but I am a smoker and I drink a lot of coffee, both of which I’ve heard deplete B vitamins from the body. That has always lead me to assume that supplementing isn’t a bad idea.

Am I wasting my money? Should I just not take them?

B-vitamins are water soluble and you will piss bright yellow any surplus. If you feel improvement, consider taking a lower dosage and seeing if that is adequate.

I agree with @hearkat try taking less. Are you taking a B complex? The doses might be 500%+ of the daily recommended dose. If this is a new thing, consider that it is summer and you might just be a little dehydrated.

Why not get a few blood tests done and see if you are deficient instead of guessing.

Basically because I don’t believe in going to the doctor for every insignificant little thing.

I don’t think it’s dehydration, I drink a ton of water, but I will look for a lower dose.

I don’t see how it is for every little thing. You can just do it next time you go to the GYN. I assume you go once a year.

I wasn’t be facetious, just to be clear. I just don’t have any appointments anytime soon so making an appointment to get check for a vitamin deficiency that may or may not even exist just isn’t something I’d be personally inclined to do, that’s all.

@DigitalBlue I’m just agreeing that I would not suggest running to the doctor for a vitamin test when you don’t have any serious symptoms. I thought maybe what I suggested was misunderstood. My neighbor was taking B12 shots because her nurse daughter thought it was a good idea, and when she told her doctor during a routine appointment he checked her number and her B12 was off the charts. I’m not thinking that will be the case for you, I just think it’s worth while to check stuff instead of guessing once in a while if there is reason to think you might need. Saying you feel much better means to me there is a good chance you need some supplements, I trust your perception of how your body feels. I’m not big on “overdosing” though, I believe it taxes the body. I don’t think you are either, obviously you asked this question because you don’t want to take much more than necessary.

@JLeslie right, I just realized that my own response sounded snippy and I hadn’t meant it to be. :)
I think we’re on the same page.

Just to add, many of my friends are on the low side of the normal range. Low enough that it isn’t worth risking the level dipping below, so they do take a supplement. I don’t know about the other B’s. I find it interesting. Even those who eat meat, which should be a very good source of B12. When I take B12 I don’t feel a significant difference, even though my blood levels fall very low without the supplements. Maybe I also should consider a B complex? I haven’t checked other B vitamins.

@JLeslie like I said, I have no idea if it’s a placebo effect, since that is always possible, but I feel a big difference when I haven’t taken them in a while. When I take them with my other vitamins I am more energetic and just feel better overall.
For what it’s worth, I have taken them in the past and had highlighter-yellow-pee. Lately, my urine is brighter (my pee is usually clear, like I said, I drink a lot of water)... but it’s not fluorescent. I don’t know if that matters, though.

If your urine is bright yellow from B supplements, it’s not harmful or anything. At worst, you’re just wasting a little bit of money since you’re peeing some of it out.

I agree it’s nothing to run to the doctor with now. I would wait until you are seeing someone (for something else) and mention it during your next appt so they can test for it while you’re there.

At the same time, maybe you don’t need to test. If you’re happy with the current levels of B vitamin and can afford it, then I guess it doesn’t really matter. Peeing bright yellow is normal with these supplements and not a sight of any danger.
