What should I give to the "special" school bus drivers and what, if anything, should I give to the bus coordinator guy?

Asked by jca (36062points) June 14th, 2013

A few months ago, my daughter broke her leg and has been in a wheelchair. The school had to provide a special handicapped bus to get her to school every day. In the first 2–3 weeks, the transportation coordinator and his assistant were the drivers. The coordinator-guy was very helpful, and had the bus come at a time that was convenient for me and my work schedule. They were trying to get the schedule together so they could get another two drivers who had time to spare. Then it was some various people for the next week or so, and for the past two weeks (and presumably for the next week, when school will end) it’s been this guy and this woman.

I want to give something to the drivers as a thank you, as I would if she were on a regular school bus.

Should I just give a gift to the current guy and woman? Should I give a gift to the coordinator and his assistant, who both did it for the first few weeks?

I was thinking a gift card, as that’s what I gave the regular driver for Christmas. It’s going to add up, if I give $20–25 to 4 people, but if Fluther thinks I should, then I will.

How about mason jar cupcakes

Homemade banana bread? Fancy jam?

This link has some cute stuff.

Anyway… I don’t really do cash/gift card gifts. Homemade is much more special, not to mention cheaper. Do you have the time to make something?

@Cupcake: No, but I could buy something at Costco, like baked goods…..I could put them in a basket or something with a good card.

Bus drivers must love caffeine, right?

Chocolate covered coffee beans and some nice ground coffee beans? A travel coffee mug?

If your daughter could draw a picture of her in a wheelchair or on the bus… or even just “thank you”, you could make a coffee mug or mouse pad or something out of it. I think that would be cute.

Not a bottle of wine!

I’d go with gift cards to dunkin donuts or any place that serves breakfast in your area.
The chocolate covered coffee beans that @Cupcake suggested are a great idea.

I would not mind spending $20 each. They were nice to your daughter and accommodated your schedule. How much is that worth?

I always give my amazing soap to people because it is awesome and it is something they can always use. Also… a nice flowering plant for the table centrepiece is nice too.

I think $10 or $15 gift cards would be fine. Or the baked goods idea.

Or just a card, written by your daughter to say thank you. If you want to put something in, put in a card so he can buy a coffee or something. The card will be what makes the impact though.

I am not a fan of gift cards but I do understand their practicality. I still lean towards something like @Cupcake said, maybe an inexpensive yet creative and thoughtful small gift like a jar of cupcake mix or whatever, or a thank you note from your daughter? Or a drawing? That would mean a lot to me if I were them. Then again, I wouldn’t expect anything, so whatever it was would be really nice I think.
