How should I deal with my confusing first job, (details inside)

Asked by 15barcam (759points) June 15th, 2013

I’m a high school student with good grades and a busy athletic schedule. This summer I decided I needed to get a job and earn some money to save for college. Although I had literally no experience with the exception of babysitting, one of my father’s friends needed some help at his restaurant, so I went in to ask him about maybe getting a job.
The conversation lasted about two minutes; he told me to come in on Saturday at eleven to get a t-shirt and to “talk to the girls about what I’m suppost to do.” He gave me no other information, but seemed to be in a rush, so I just thanked him and left.
Well, today is Saturday, and not only is he not going to be there but I have no clue what he even wants me to do. He’s on vacation, so I don’t want to disturb him by asking what probably seems like stupid questions. I don’t know who “the girls” are, I haven’t filled out any kind of application, so the people who are there will have no idea who I am, and I really don’t know who to talk to when I get there today. This is my first job, so I’m really nervous and don’t know how to go about clarifying my confusion without sounding completely incompetent! Any suggestions?

I’d be nervous too!
Just find one of the servers when you get there. Tell her your situation and I’m sure she’ll be more than happy to help you.

Just go there and tell the top person on duty what you just said here.

When you go in, ask to speak to the manager. Tell them that Mr. So and So asked you to start today, and you are ready to work, but do not know what to do.

If the boss there already knows you have no experience waiting tables then you probably will start out doing other things. Somebody is in charge because I can’t believe the owner just takes off on vacation and is prepared to let the cards fall where they may. Look for this person they should be easy to identify. They should get you set up. The time clock and the t shirt. Pay careful attention to what this person tells you because it also will be in their best interest that you are ready to do whatever you are going to be doing. Food service is a fast paced occupation and you need to be flexible as the situation changes. It’s going to feel good to get that first pay check.

Go in, ask for the manager and tell her what the owner said. She will walk you through it. He has confidence in his people and they are probably expecting you.

Show up, on time, for your first day. Introduce yourself to the person in charge, and tell him/her that Mr. _____ hired you and told you to begin your job at 11:00 today.

Please don’t say a single word about being “nervous” or your “confusion.” Impress the person with your self-confidence, reliability, and good business manners.

Good luck with the new job!

Smile, be friendly and be willing to do whatever they ask you to do. Ask questions as you need to. You’ll be fine.

@15barcam I’m so glad!! It seems like the things that we worry about the most end up working out just fine.
