I'm new to Mac and have a stupid question.

How do I get the disk drive to open in my MacBook Pro? Maybe I just slide a disk in, but if that’s the case, how do I eject the current disk? I don’t even know if there is a disk in there but the new disk does not want to go in so I’m assuming its already occupied.
I know I’m going to love this but the learning curve is a killer for this old broad.

It doesn’t “open”, it’s just a slot. To eject a disc, right click on the disc and hit “eject”, or just press and hold the eject button on your keyboard.
…yeah that.
To find the disc, go to “documents” and it is under “devices”. Cntrl+click on it and you’ll see “eject”. (Hold the control key down then click while keeping the control key held down)
Another option is to find the disc’s icon on your desktop, click on it, then hit ⌘E. This, in my experience, is the most reliable way to eject a disc. All of the other options mention should work, though.
P.S. “Disk” refers to magnetic storage (e.g., hard drives), while “disc” refers to optical storage (e.g., CDs or DVDs).
Thank you. I think the disk is stuck. It made a noise but wouldn’t open. I’ll make an appointment at the Genuis Bar when I get back to California. :-(
@Judi – You can restart the computer and right after you hear the chime you can hold down the eject (upper-right) key and hold it until your disc comes out. I can’t promise this will work, but it will be the first thing a Genius does when she starts up your computer. (Hold it for a good while, too – don’t just tap it.)
@Judi Does the disc show up on the desktop or in the sidebar when you open a Finder window? If so, ⌘E should work. If not, @serenityNOW‘s recommendation should do it. You could also try opening iTunes to see if it recognizes the disc. If it does, you can eject it from within the program (there will be a clickable eject button next to the icon representing the disc in iTunes).
You said you’re not positive that there’s actually a disc inside the computer, though. Is there any way to confirm that none of your CDs or DVDs are unaccounted for? There are some other things you could try if you’re sure that the drive is empty.
Click on the leftmost icon in the Dock. It is a blue face. From the menu Finder—> Preferences. Click show CD, DVD. Then if a disk is in the drive there will be a icon on the desktop you can click and drag to the trash in the dock to eject.
And if it is truly stuck in there hold down the trackpad (like a button press) while you reboot.
If that doesn’t work you are kinda fucked.
Don’t macs and stupid questions go hand in hand?
I keed, I keed.
Let us know if it is stuck or now. If it is, you can try and take a pair of needle nose pliers, when you hit eject, the disc will probably lift up and bit and you can grab it. They need to be thin though, but I’ve succeed before in getting one out of a mac like that.
