Know any tripod dogs?

Asked by jaytkay (25810points) June 20th, 2013

There are at least three 3-legged dogs in my neighborhood. One little pug runs with his owner, and he’s FAST!

Is this common? I don’t recall meeting more than one 3-legged dog in my first 40 years of life.

Now I know three!

Excited for the block party, the 3-legged race will be awesome!

Yes.. I know one. It doesn’t bother him.

There is one down the street from me – large brown <something>. I’ve lived here for 6 years, and that family (and dog) have been there longer than I have.

He looks kind of funny as he lopes across the lawn, but he makes pretty good time, and I have never seen him lose his balance.

jaytkay, I think you might want to get the Guinness Book people on the phone….

@jaytkay Is it a front paw or a back paw that’s missing?

jaytkay's avatar

@dxs Hmmm, they all are missing a front leg.

Coincidence?

I’ve never asked how they lost their legs (or if they were born 3-legged), I always assumed traffic accident.

Well, my Martin, a cat, is missing a back leg, and that little guy is FAST!

@SadieMartinPaul I forgot to include cats. Go, Martin, go!

Years ago a pet was a pet and it probably would have been put down. Now a pet is a member of the family and people go to extraordinary lengths to keep them alive.

I grew up with one: back leg missing due to being hit by a car. And he was fast, too! And @Judi it happened in the late 50’s. I’ve seen videos of some; even with only two legs, including one dog (a greyhound? don’t recall) whose two legs were both on the same side. That one really blew my mind!
