Yoga for seniors?

Asked by Milano (28points) June 22nd, 2013

I know that yoga fits people of all ages, which is great. Anyway, my aunty wants to try yoga, and she is 75 now. I kind of think it’s a bit too late to start doing yoga. What do you think.

Have her check with her physician. But it should be good for her or have her try Tai Chi for low impact exercise, stretching and balance improvement.

She could try karate or jiu jitsu :)

You’re never too old for exercise. Tell her to go for it.

My mother (in her 90’s) used to go regularly to exercise, stretching classes at her Staged Care facility..labeled as a help for arthritis but it was gentle, slow and controlled stretching similar to yoga. Many of the clients were in wheel chairs or did the work sitting down and standing, holding onto a chair. No one lay on the floor.

Suggest to her aunt that she have someone trained set up a suitable program for her or even get an RX for several sessions with a Physical Therapist to design exercises for her.

It is not too late, but unless she’s pretty spry you would not send her to an open class.
There are ‘gentle yoga’, ‘yoga for seniors’, ‘chair yoga’ classes that employ variations of the asanas that are easier to do.
For most of the classical asanas, there are variations or alternates that are not as challenging and can be done by seniors, pregnant women, and folks with disabilities.

I just joined a fitness center. One of our yoga instructors is in her late-80s. The world’s oldest yoga instructor is 93

Swami Bua was somewhere between 116 and 120 and still teaching (and could demonstrate) in his little apartment when he passed away in July 2010.
He could blow a conch shell for minutes at a time.

It’s never to late if she has a good instructor who specializes in seniors. Iyengar yoga focuses on proper alignment and uses lots of props to make sure your aunty won’t hurt herself.

Tai Chi might be easier on her joints, and still be physically beneficial. I see old people in the park do this all the time.
