Any healthy movie theater snack ideas?

Asked by rockfan (14632points) June 24th, 2013

I’m going to see a movie tonight, and I’m getting tired of the standard trail mix of nuts and dried fruit. Any ideas? Preferably unusual or interesting foods.

It’s best to not snack during movies/TV because it’s mindless eating. You’re not actually tasting much of the snack.

Try to eat only when you’re going to enjoy the taste.

I like frozen treats during movies. Like frozen coffee. Or sometimes I freeze juice pouches at home and when one is solid, I’ll cut off the top and eat with a spoon. It takes me a long time to eat so overall, not that many calories.

@seekingwolf I always portion movie theater snacks to one or two servings, so it’s not really mindless eating. If you bring an entire bag of nuts, then it’s mindless eating.

By the way, I feel sorry for the people who sit behind you during movies! The scraping noise would drive me absolutely crazy.

Mindless eating isn’t about portion size. It’s about eating without thinking, when you’re doing something like watching TV/movies. So you’re not really thinking about your eating or enjoying the taste.

I’m glad you’re portioning it out though. that helps. Ideally, you should be getting to the point where you are okay to go to the movies and not eat at all during it, but what you’re doing so far is good.

I don’t take my frozen juice pouches with me to the movies. That’s for home only, no way they would stay solid like that if I took them with me. I like frozen coffee or cappucino drinks when I see movies in public. I just drink through a straw.

Depends on what you are using to smuggle in contraband… How much room do you have? Cargo pockets are helpful…
It’s a hot day where I am today so I am thinking that a tupperware full of chilled tabbouli would be nice during a movie. It’s delicious enough that it should be junk food, but it’s aggressively good for you!

@bookish1 That sounds really good! And luckily, everyone at my favorite movie theater is too lazy to stop anyone with outside food. I usually carry my snacks and beverages in plain sight and no one has said anything yet.

@rockfan: Cool. I used to get patted down at the movie theater I went to when I was a kid, haha.
Maybe you could bring some hummus and pita too ;)

I like snacking on edamame. Hmm

cheese sticks
any type of fruits that’s finger food
kale chips
home made potato chips (baked)
veggies
whole wheat crackers

Cherry tomatoes, rapes, cherries, or other similar fruits.

Last time I went to the movies it was a lentil cold salad and I used carrot sticks to dip.

I always bring something different if I bring anything at all. It’s not mindless eating because the flavors are distinctive enough that I am focused on the taste.

Oh and I tried herbal water for the first time, it was lavender and something.. It was odd but good.

Everyone is entitled to a small treat every now and then. Take a small bar of dark chocolate. There is a brand you can get here that has individually wrapped, two square bars packaged into a larger pack. Very handy to avoid over doing it. Nuts are healthy as long as you don’t over do them.

You’re all so good. :0/
I always get the biggest tub of popcorn and pump it full of that fake butter shit they have.

I like all of your heathy alternative ideas however. I just may have to try that next time. :0)

Red seedless grapes are my favorite. Almonds too (but they may be a little too crunchy for a movie theater).
