Is there a psychological diagnosis for the people who imagine that airline safety rules and regulations should not apply to them?

Asked by josie (30934points) June 25th, 2013

This news story and video, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/24/lindsay-bienaime-us-airways-arrest-cell-phone_n_3491832.html?icid=maing-grid7|main5|dl3|sec1_lnk3%26pLid%3D335447 caught my eye.

This woman clearly believes that the standard airline safety procedures do not/should not apply to her, and continues with the delusion as the cops take her off the airplane in handcuffs.

Nobody is forced to fly in an airplane. But these days, if they choose to do so, they have to go through several layers of bullshit to make it happen. Otherwise, they don’t fly. Pretty simple.

But I just wondered if we are seeing a symptom of something that has a clinical name?

That woman & those like her should be strip searched so as to remove the giant bug from their arses.

Whoa… Hadn’t heard of this one.
Would that just be a sociopath or someone with NPD?

Wouldn’t it be the same kind of people who feel like they can do whatever they want to their kids because it’s THEIR kid, and to hell with the law?

Yes there is: rich.

Wow. I’m watching the video. What a disgusting red neck. She had a small child with her? I hope they put the child in protective services.

@Dutchess_III : Red neck is not the best word for her. With a name like that, she’s almost certainly Haitian…

Does the DSM have a simple heading called “stupid”?

I’d say NPD. Narcissists don’t believe the rules apply to them, they are above it all.
I have never understood this issue, sure, sometimes rules are stupid and meant to be broken, but…I have zero issue with security checks at airports etc. My local county fair was checking bags at the entrance the other week and I just joke about ” Oh damn, don’t take my Heroin please!”

I find humor is the best approach. Yep, no guns or bombs but leave my opium alone.
This is a running joke from my travels in Asia a few years ago when a baggy of Taiwan Tide exploded on the conveyer belt while I was shifting things around in my luggage to balance out the weight requirements. Even the serious faced Taiwanese custom guys were laughing when I said ” No, that is laundry detergent not Heroin! ” lolol

Another vote for NPD.

Why would we assume she has any psychological disorder at all?

“This woman clearly believes that the standard airline safety procedures do not/should not apply to her…”

That’s just your interpretation of what little information the article provides about a singular event in this woman’s life. So, perhaps she’s narcissistic, but that hardly means she has NPD. Maybe she’s just your run-of-the-mill belligerent bitch.

I vote for “run-of-the-mill belligerent bitch” because I don’t know what NPD stands for.” There are a LOT of people like that out there. Usually you see them on “Cops” and nasty reality shows and such, and I say it has more to do with how they were raised than any kind of mental disorder.

I go with @syz‘s diagnosis. The French actor Gerard Depardieu called out “I need to piss, I need to piss” after the seat belt sign had been switched on for take-off. When the cabin crew said no, he pissed into bottle and spilled some of his urine on the plane’s carpet. Gerard Depardieu has now become a Russian citizen trying to avoid paying taxes in France. Na Sdarówje!

I would also say she’s a narcissist. It’s all about her and nothing and nobody else matters.
